Abstract
Stabilized methyl chloroform compositions comprise methyl chloroform containing between 0.1 and 5% nitromethane and 0.1 to 10% tertiary amyl alcohol based on the weight of methyl chloroform. Preferably the ratio of nitromethane to amyl alcohol is between 1:1 and 1:4. When the methyl chloroform contains a minor amount of moisture the above compositions contain 0.2 to 3% nitromethane, 0.5 to 5% tertiary amyl alcohol and 0.1 to 5% of 1,3-dioxolane. The invention further comprises a method of stabilizing methyl chloroform from a liquid mixture thereof with higher boiling compounds, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon oils, which comprises adding to said mixture 0.01 to 5% of 1,3-dioxolane based on the weight of methyl chloroform, vaporizing the mixture in a fractional distillation zone, recovering a dioxolane containing methyl chloroform fraction from said zone and adding to said recovered fraction 0.5 to 10% of tertiary amyl alcohol and 0.1 to 5% of nitromethane based on the weight of the methyl chloroform fraction. The spent compositions may also be reconstituted by distillation and subsequent addition of tertiary amyl alcohol and nitromethane. The compositions are used for degreasing metals, e.g. aluminium, iron, and tin-plate.
