[Class 23] [Also in Group III] A method of coating printing - cylinders with a sensitized resist solution, which after application to the cylinder is dried thereon, is characterized in that the resist solution, after application to the cylinder, is subjected to a controllable centrifugal action in a direction radially of the cylinder and to a separately controllable centrifugal action in a direction lengthwise of the cylinder. Apparatus for carrying out this method is shown, comprising a horizontally rotatable table 15 carrying bearings 17 for the shaft 18 of the cylinder C to be coated. A dust-preventing housing 19, 20 encloses the cylinder, and felt sealing-rings 27 may be provided to make the housing substantially air-tight. An outer housing 39, having a cover 40 with hinged sections 41, 42, is provided. The table 15 is rotated by a variable speed electric motor 29, and the cylinder is rotated about its longitudinal axis by a variable speed motor 34. The coating liquid is applied to the rotating cylinder by lifting an elongated shallow tray 47, which tray is also used to hold water or alcohol for washing the cylinder preparatory to the coating operation. When both motors are operating, centrifugal action operates to thin the film of coating uniformly over the cylinder, and the initial speeds of rotation used are preferably lower than the final speeds. To dry the coating, air, heated by elements 45 and filtered by a screen 26, is allowed to enter through openings 46, 23, and escapes through vents 51.
