Abstract

<PICT:0498593/III/1> A printing cylinder is coated with a light-sensitive layer, for the photo-mechanical manufacture of a printing form, by slowly rotating the cylinder while partly submerged in, or in contact with, a body of the coating liquid contained in an open receptacle, the cylinder being kept at such an elevated temperature that the coating dries on the emerging portion of the cylinder surface immediately after this portion leaves the coating liquid. The heated cylinder is preferably arranged horizontally, and is rotated at a speed of about one revolution in 5 minutes. The coating liquid may be in a pan floating on heated water in an outer receptacle, and contact between the cylinder surface and the coating liquid may be made and broken by altering the level of the water. Alternatively, an apparatus, such as is shown in the Figure, may be used in which a narrow channel 2, extending along the whole length of the heated cylinder 1, is supplied with coating liquid from a constantly fed reservoir 5 provided with overflow tubes 8. The channel 2 may be provided with bevelled edges 9 and with a removable cover 3. The reservoir 5 is enclosed within a casing 10, fed with warmed water and supported on adjusting screws 12. Contact between the coating liquid in the channel 2 and the cylinder may be made either by lowering the cylinder or by raising the casing 10 by means of the screws 12. Wipers 15, 16 remove dust from the cylinder prior to coating, and a guard 21 prevents access of dust to the coated cylinder. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the cylinder may be held in an inclined position during coating and/or separation from the coating liquid, and higher speeds of rotation may be employed, the coating not necessarily drying immediately on emergence of the cylinder surface from the coating liquid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
