Abstract

502,488. Delivering measured quantities of liquid. COUGHTRIE, O. Sept. 17, 1937, No. 25335. [Class 106 (v)] Measured quantities of liquid are discharged from a receptacle 10, Fig. 3, in which the liquid level is maintained constant by a barometric feed device, by raising a measuring cup 30 until ports 32 in a sleeve 28 at the centre of the cup register with ports 34 formed above the liquid level in a tubular rod 16 on which the sleeve slides. The rod 16 carries a cap 14 whch is secured against a rubber ring 26 at the top of the receptacle 10 by a nut 20 engaging a rubber washer 22 below the receptacle 10. The nut 20 is formed with an aperture 86 smaller than the bore of the rod 16 to retain by capillary action any liquid draining from the wall of the bore after the main discharge of liquid has taken place. The cap 14 carries an air tube 64. The cup 30 is operated by a handle 56 on a shaft 42 carrying arms 46 formed with grooves 48 engaged by pins 50 on a flange 52, at the top of the sleeve 28. The flange 52 has flat sides engaging the arms 46 to prevent rotation of the sleeve 28. The cap 14 is formed with an extension 66 supporting the cork 70 of an inverted bottle feeding liquid to the receptacle 10 through a tube 74 when a hole 80 extending through the tube 74 to an air pipe 78 is exposed. Fig. 5 shows another construction in which the cap 14 and receptacle 10 are secured together by a slotted head 164 screwing on the upper part of a rod 160 having its lower part, which is of greater diameter than the upper part, bored and fitted with a retaining member 166 engaging the bottom of the receptacle. A discharge nozzle 178 of somewhat " figure eight " formation is secured at the bottom of the rod 160. When the cup 30 is raised to discharge liquid, air is drawn through ports 174 in the lower part of the rod 160 into the annular space between the sleeve 28 and the upper part of the rod and the discharge of this air when the cup is lowered removes liquid adhering to the interior of the rod. Any liquid failing to escape lodges on the ledge at the top of the nozzle 178. Fig. 7 shows a further construction in which the cap 14 and receptacle 10 are secured together by screws 286 and the cup 30 is raised by lifting a rod 260 until a stop collar 266 engages a flange 268 on the cap 14 when the ports 32 in the sleeve 28 are above the top of the discharge tube 36. A cotton sealing disc 261 is preferably provided at the upper internal end of the sleeve 28.
