[Class 55 (i)] [Also in Groups VI and III] Peat is distilled in a vertical retort in which it is'first dried by external heating and is then ignited. Air or other oxygen-containing gas is supplied to the retort in such quantity as to maintain partial combustion and to carry over the carbonaceous material formed so that it is deposited in a receiver with the distillation products to form a solid mass.
