Abstract

501,011. Magnetic work-holder. ROBBINS, O. E. Aug. 16,1937, No. 22445. [Class 60] An electromagnetic work-holder is provided with means for setting its, holding surface angularly in two mutually perpendicular directions. The work-holder comprises a body 13 having thereon cores 14 provided with coils 15, the coils being enclosed by sides 16 and projecting into holes in a work plate 17, the spaces around the cores being filled with lead 18. Guides 20 are provided to act as stops for the work, and are adjustably secured by bolts 22 and slots 21. Secured by bolts 26 in a notch 24 in the body 13 is a cylindrical member 11 the ends of which act as pivots and are seated in bearings 26 carried by an intermediate base 29, the bearings being slotted at 27 and provided with locking bolts 28 to secure the body 13 in angularly adjusted position. At the other end of the body is secured a second cylinder 31 of the same diameter as the member 11, the axes of the cylinders 11, 31 being parallel and spaced apart a known distance, so that by inserting a gauge block 32 of known thickness between the cylinder 31 and the base, the angle of tilt of the body 13 may be determined by the use of a table of sines. In order to set the holder angularly about an axis perpendicular to that of the member 11, the base 29 has secured thereto two cylinders 12, 37 perpendicular to the cylinders 11, 31, the ends of the cylinder 12 being located in bearings 34 similar to the bearings 26 and mounted on a secondary base 40, which may be secured to a bench, &c. The angle of the base 29 to the base 40 may be determined. as above by a sine block gauge 39, or by a screw adjustably carried by the base 29 and engaging the base 40.
