Abstract

500,592. Directive wireless systems. JEFFCOCK, J. P. Aug. 20, 1937, No. 22812. [Class 40 (v)] A highly selective cathode-ray tube direction finder is provided with an omni-directional aural monitoring device having a band-pass characteristic with a sharp projecting peak coinciding with the peak of the directional circuit characteristic whereby signals transmitted on frequencies adjacent to the indicating signal frequency can also be heard, thus facilitating the tuning. In Fig. 1, two components 1, 2 of a directive aerial system, e.g. Adcock or Bellini-Tosi, are fed to the two pairs of deflecting plates of a cathode-ray tube 3 through two sets of frequency changers and through the highly selective amplifiers A and B. The bearing " sense " is obtained by feeding the signal from the omni-directional aerial 4 through 'similar frequency changers and the selective amplifier C to the modulating or focusing cylinder 8. After the first stage of frequency conversion, the non-directional signal is also fed through the parallel connected monitor amplifier D having a flat-topped band-pass characteristic. The outputs from the " sense " and monitor amplifiers are combined after detection to produce the characteristic of Fig. 4. For C.W. reception a variable heterodyne note is produced by means of oscillator 6.
