Abstract
500,398. Roofs ; tiles ; metal sheets. YEARSLEY, R. A. April 30, 1938, No. 4644. [Classes (ii), 20 (iv), and 87(i)] A roofing-construction comprises an underroofing of corrugated-metal sheets 7 which are disposed with the corrugations running in the direction from eaves to ridge and are each furnished on the outer surface with regularyspaced projections, indentations or channels adapted for engagement with the nibs of tiles 4 of clay, concrete or the like. The roof shown in Fig. 1 is provided with regularlyspaced projections in the form of transverse battens 15 over which the nibs 5 of the tiles 4 are hooked. The battens 15 may be secured by bolts 17 which serve to connect the adjacent corrugated-metal sheets 7, the bolt holes in the edges of the sheets being appropriately pitched. Each bolt 17 may have a cranked upper end terminating in a nib which is caused to bite into the top surface of the batten 15 ; alternatively, the bolt 17 is adapted to anchor a clip having a curved saddle portion to fit one of the corrugations of a sheet 7 and a cranked portion which overlaps the top surface of the batten 15 and is secured thereto by a nail, screw or prong. The roof shown in Fig. 2 is provided with spaced metal channels 20, 20a for receiving the nibs 5 of the two top courses of tiles 4 ; the next course of tiles is positioned by an angle-strip 21, and the lowermost course of tiles by a channel 22 which has a flange 23 to engage a lug 24 on the underside of the tiles in the next course. These channels and anglestrips may be secured by Aquare-headed bolts which also connect adjacent corrugated sheets 7 and are disposed with their heads on the said strips; alternatively, the bolts 17 may be used to anchor a clip having a saddle to fit over one corrugation of a metal sheet 7 and upstanding lugs which grip a channel strip between them. The roof shown in Fig. 3 comprises asbestoscement sheets 6 mounted on the corrugatedmetal sheets 7 which are secured to the purlins 8 by J-bolts 9 adapted also to secure the sheets 6. The projections for engaging the. nibs 5 of the tiles 4 are in the form of regularlyspaced channels or laths 10 which may be of asbestos-cement and secured to the sheets 6 by cement or other adhesive. The roof shown in Fig. 4 is arranged with each of the upturned tiles 4c in close engagement with a corresponding corrugation in the sheet 7, and the downturned tiles 4d overlie the edges of the tiles 4c. The nibs 5c, 5d of the tiles 4c, 4d are set in bitumen, mastic, or other suitable material in regularlyspaced pockets or indentations 13, 14 provided in the sheet 7. The tiles may be additionally secured to the roof structure by wires which are either passed over the outer faces of the tiles and covered by the tiles in the succeeding course, or engage lugs 12 provided on the underside of the tiles as shown in Fig. 3. Instead of the nibs 5 of the tiles 4 being integral therewith, they may be formed by pegs set in the tiles.
