[Class 58] Growth-promoting phytohormones (substances normally present in plants which have a specific stimulating action on the development and the growth of the vegetative system of such plants and which are substantially not consumed in their metabolism) are applied in a practically fat free form to the surface of seeds while swelling of the seeds is avoided. As examples of growth promoting phytohor.- mones #-indene acetic acid, #-indene propionic acid, #-indene-butyric acid, (alpha-naphthyl-acetic acid, the esters and salts of these acids, biotin, N-pyrimidyl-thiazolium compounds such as vitamin #<1> and isoalloxazines especially lactoflavin, are mentioned. A solution (aqueous, alcoholic or petroleum ether) of the materials may be sprayed on the seeds which are then dried or the materials may be mixed with solid carrier substances such as kaolin, chalk, calcium sulphate, diatomaceous earth, bole or calcium naphthol pitch and then applied to the seeds. A small. amount of dust binding agent such as fatty oil or fat may be added. Disinfecting agents, for example organic mercury compounds, may be added simultaneously. The seeds may be immersed in a solution of the phyto-hormones and then dried: wetting agents such as condensation products of higher molecular alcohols with ethylene oxide or isoalkylated naphthalene sulphonic acid salts can be added to the solution.
