Abstract
500,161. R÷ntgen-ray tubes. RESEARCH CORPORATION. May 17, 1938, No. 14695. Convention date, June 9, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] An electrostatic machine generating directcurrent power comprises charge - inducing and charge - receiving bodies between which the capacity can be varied, arranged so that during periods of increasing capacitance, a charge flows from the lower potential side of the load circuit to the chargereceiving member, and during periods of decreasing capacitance, a charge flows from the charge-receiving member to the higher potential side of the load circuit, the passage of the charges taking place unidirectionally under the influence of small potential differences. The generator 15 is housed in an earthed metallic casing 11 containing a highly insulating gas such as carbon tetrachloride or a gas at high pressure, or preferably the casing is maintained at a high vacuum by the operation of a pump 11. The Figure shows a generator combined with an X-ray tube 89 which includes a heated filament 85 within a metallic cup 87 connected through a rectifying valve 45 to the stator 15, and an air or water cooled target 91. The tube is enclosed by a lead sheath 93 having an opening 95 for the emission of X-rays, and capacity in the load circuit is provided by a condenser 97. The filament current may be externally controlled by a rheostat through an insulating link. Specification 407,847, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
