Abstract
499,936. Railway vehicle bogies. HADDAN, R. (Symington-Gould Corporation) May 18, 1938, No. 14847. [Glass 103 (vi)] A railway truck comprising a pair of side frames having compression and tension members 3, 4 spaced by column guides 5 to leave an opening for the end of a bolster 36, the bolster ends are provided with convex cylindrical portions co-operating with concave surfaces on the column guides 5 to allow relative rotation round a vertical axis limited by radial surfaces 31, 38 on the guides and bolster respectively. Shims 33 are provided between the curved surfaces of the bolster and guide and are correspondingly curved and have corresponding .radial parts 37. To hold the shims in place each shim is also provided with a lower flange 39 which overlies part of the bolster spring 39 and is provided with a lug 42 interlocking with a pocket in the bolster. The helical springs 40 and the elliptic spring 44 supporting the bolster in the side frame are located by lugs and pockets. In a modification the shims are made in two pieces 51, 52 interlocked by a lug 54 and a flange extension 39a. In a further modification a, plank on which the springs 40 rest is provided with corrugations fitting over corrugations in the frame. The aperture containing the springs is larger than that containing the bolster to facilitate removal of the latter. The shims have flat faces engaging flat faces on the frame and curved faces engaging curved faces on the bolster. The bolster and shims have interlocking flanges. The bolster and frames may be assembled without lowering the bolster, the shims being moved upwardly into place. In two further modifications the shims are omitted and in one of these modifications the engaging faces of the bolster and frame are flat and the radial surfaces limiting the rotative movement having sufficient angular divergence to allow this movement.
