of said shoes by an amount substantially equal to the desired lateral movement of the bolster with respect to side frames and shoes and adapted to abut the said outer surfaces of the ,shoes at the limit of such lateral movement.
Other objects and advantages of the-invention, relating to the particular arrangement and construction of the various parts, will become ap parent as the description proceeds. Referring to the drawings illustrating my invention;

Referring to the drawings in detail, like parts being designated by like reference characters, there is shown a portion of a truclr l, comprising a pair of side frames 2, only one of which is illustrated. Each side frame comprises a compression member 3, a tension, member t, and bolster guide columns t spacingjintennediate portions of said compression and tension mem bers, and spaced to leave a bolster or window opening 6 therebetween. The outer ends of the compression member are continued beyond the guide columns to join the outer ends of the tension member and connect with journal boxes (not shown) or with Journal box holding means (not shown) integral with the ends of the frame.
The tension member t has an intermediate normally horizontal portion l generally boxshaped in section, the upper web portion 8 of which is extended laterally beyond the depending flanges or normally vertical web portions 9 to provide a spring-seating portion of adequate area. The spring-seating portions beyond the flanges 9 are desirably reinforced by triangular gussets N. The lower web portion l i beneath the bolster opening 6 may terminate beneath the guide columns, or at approximately such positions, leavoutward, through the corresponding column, to
finally merge with the normal plane of the web 8, thereby strengthening the angle between the hor izontal and inclined portions of the tension member, as well as providing supplemental or intermediate support for those portions of the tension member between the guide columns. This construction at the same time provides for interlocking between the frame and an associated spring plank, if used.
Each guide column desirably comprises a web portion H which extends substantially vertically from the compression member to the tension member, the upper portion desirably being inwardly offset toward the other guide column to provide bolster-guiding portions l5. The sides of the guiding portions I5 are defined by flanges I6, extending from the side edges of the web IE, and with their free edges preferably reinforced by beading l'l. Said flanges are desirably spaced a greater distance than the width of the convolutions I2 in the tension member, so that they straddle said convolutions and connect with the main web portion 8 of the tension member on either side of said convolutions.
In a truck, in which the bolster is connected to the side frames in a manner, for example, as
shownin the Kadel Patent No. 1,630,567, of May 31, 1921, the guide columns have guiding portions engaged between lugs on the associated bolster, the planes of engagement being parallel to the longitudinal vertical plane of the side frame. When, through the omission or fiexibility'ofthe spring plank, or clearance between said plank and frame, one frame tends to lead the other, the center line of the bolster describes other than a right angle, with the longitudinal vertical plane of the side frame, forming contacts between the corresponding corners of the guide columns and bolster which are theoretically vertical lines. As the bolster moves vertically with reference to the columns under external impulses, causing movement of the supporting springs, it will speedily wear the, contacting corners of the columns until sumcient bearing area has been developed, so that any further wear will be at a progressively slower rate. I In this process of developing additional wearing surface, the preferred fit clearances between bolster and columns are lost, and. the actual clearances become too great for correct alignment of the parts.
In order to change such an undesirable condition, I desire to form the flanges l6v on the bolster guiding portions of the columns 5 with guiding surfaces It on planesradial, or substantially radial, from the vertical axis I9 of the frame, or

I To provide for the support of the bolster above the horizontal portion 1 of the tension member 4, I desirably employ a spring plate 2| so formed that it nests over the corrugations I2 for interlocking it in place on the tension member 4, said plate desirably having spring-positioning collars 22 upstanding therefrom for properly locating the supporting springs 23.
The springs 23 may be provided with an upper spring plate 24, desirably interchangeable with the lower spring plate 2!, and resting thereon, is a lateral motion spring cap 25. Saidcap desirably has an upper surface of generally conventional character for receiving lateral motion rollers or other anti-friction means 26.
The bolster 21 is of the lateral motion type provided with lower surfaces 28 on its end portions cooperating with the rollers or anti-friction Said bolster, in the present embodiment, provided with outer guide lugs 29 only, said lugs being spaced from the outer surfaces of the shoes 20 a distance faces 32 of the lugs 29 are de'sirably generally parallel thereto, so that,'at the limitof lateral movement, there are substantial abutting areas between the parts.

The flanges of the shoes have inner surfaces 35 radial with respect to the axis I9 of the frame,
like the adjacent surfaces III of the guide columns, with the included angle between the radial shoe surfaces greater than the included angle of the radial column sides, by an amount equal to the angle by which the shoes and associated bolster are permitted to swing from one extreme to the other, upon departure from the normal right angle relationship with respect to the frame. Because of this radial relationship, movement of the bolster to an extreme allowable angular and lateral position will result in contact, with the shoes 20 and between said shoes and guide columns, on generally flat surfaces substantial inextent, rather than the line contact previously referred to. In the present embodiment, however,

In order. to provide for supporting the adapter castings 20, the roller bearing spring cap 25 has outstanding ledges or flanges 38, the outer edge surfaces 39 of which are preferably coaxial with the surfaces 36 on the guide columns, said ledges terminating at notches 40 adapted to receive depending legs or lugs 4| on the loweren'ds of said shoes 20, which straddle the flanges 38.
In order to prevent the shoes from riding up above the top of the bolster 21, when in service, I provide lugs v42 outstanding from the sides of the bolster and normally lying in notches 43 in the tops of the shoes 20 between upstanding lugs 44 thereon. Sufficient clearance is provided between the lugs 42 on the bolster and'the lugs 44 on the shoes in order to allow for the desired lateral motion.
The spring cap 25, in addition to the flanges 38, has outstanding flanges 45, normally embracing the depending legs 4| on the shoes 20, and de-. pending flanges 46 partially defining the periphcry of said cap, for properly locating the associated springs 23.
From the foregoing disclosure, it will be seen that I have devised a railway truck in which the bolster is adapted to move laterally with respect to the side frames, while, at the same time, serving to limit movement of saidjrames away from one another, when assembled, by virtue of the provision of outside guide lugs. Said lugs do not engage the side frames directly, at the extreme limits of traveLbut, shoes or wear pieces interposed between the sides of the bolster-and the guide columns, which shoes are supported by spring caps, and so constructed that they are adapted to angle with respect to the associated guide columns, while allowing free lateral movement of the bolsterwithin the limits provided.-

Although a preferred embodiment of my invention has been disclosed, it will be understood that modifications may be made within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a side frame-having a bolster opening defined by guide columns, a lateral motion bolster received in said opening, a spring cap disposed in said opening below said bolster, anti-friction means supported on said cap and in turn supportin said bolster, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, interlocked with said columns, and supported on said cap, said bolster having lugs extending from upper portions thereof and overlying portions of said shoes to keep the latter in place, clearance being provided for allowing the desired limited motion of said bolster with respect to said frame.
2. In combination'with a. side frame having a bolster opening, a lateral motion bolster received therein, a spring cap disposed. in said opening below said bolster, rollers supported on said cap and in turn supporting said bolster, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, interlocked with said columns, and formed with depending lugs straddling portions of said cap, said bolster having :lugs
disposed outwardly of said shoes for limiting lateral movement thereof.

ported on said cap and in turn supporting said bolster, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, said shoes resting on portions of said cap and having notches in the upper portions thereof, said bolster having ears ilttingin said notches for preventing undesired upward movementof said shoes, sumcient. clearance being provided for lateral movement of said bolster with respect to said shoes.

In combination with a sideframe having a bolster opening defined'by guide columns, a lateral motion bolster received in said opening, a spring cap disposed in said opening beneath said bolster, springs resting err-said frame and supporting said cap, anti-friction means supported on-said cap and in turn supporting said bolster, and shoes disposedbetween the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, said shoes having outstandingflanges straddling said columns, the surfaces on said flanges adjacent said columns being radial from the vertical axis of said frame, and the I 1 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the side frame the column surfaces for allowing angling movement of said shoes with respect to said frame, and corresponding angling movement of the bolster disposed between said shoes.

In a railway truck, a side frame comprising a compression member, a tension member, bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said members and spaced to leave a bolster opening therebetween, said guide columns comprising transverse webs and side flanges, a bolster with an end portion received in said opening, and a supporting member underlying said end portion, the bottom surface of said bolster end portion and the top surface of said supporting member having roller seats, rollers engaging seats for supporting said bolster from said member, and shoes disposed between the sides ofv said bolster and columns, said shoes resting 5; member and having downactions straddling shcii holster having iugs receive-d it) upper portions of said ing outstanding flanges embracing saidflioister having lugs spaced from the adja flanges for allowing the desired lateral rion of said bolster with respect to said supporting member.

In a railway truck, a side frame comprising a compression member, a tension member, bolster guide columns spacing intermediate portions of said members and spaced to leave a bolster opening therebetween, said guide columns comprising transverse webs and side flanges, said webs having adjacent surfaces cylindrically concave about the Vertical axis of said frame, and said flanges having outer surfaces radial from said axis, a bolster with an end portion received in said opening, and a spring supported member underlying said end portion, the bottom surface of said bolster end portion and the top surface of said supporting member having roller seats, rollers engaging said seats for supporting said bolster from said member, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said columns, said shoes comprising web portions with flanges outstanding therefrom, the outer surfaces of said web portionsbeing coaxial with the adjacent surfaces of the columns, and the inner surfaces of the flanges being radial from the axis of the frame, with the included angle between said surfaces greater than the included angle between the radial surfaces on the'columns for allowing a. desired amount of angling therebetween, said, shoes resting on said spring supported member and having projections straddling shelf portions thereof; said bolster having lugs received in notches in the upper portions ,of said shoes, and lugs spaced from the adjacent flanges on said shoes for. allowing the desired lateral motion of said bolster with respect to said supporting member.

In combination with a side frame having a. bolster opening defined by guide columns, a bolster received in said opening and spaced from the guide columns, means for supporting said bolster in said opening and allowing for lateral motion thereof, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, said bolster being laterallz, movable with respect to said shoes but interlocked therewith'for angling movement, said shoes and columns having coaxial bearing surfaces to allow for such angling movement.

A slice adapted to lie between a bolster guide column and the adjacent side of a bolster, comprising a web portion with flanges at the sides thereof, said web portion having a flat side and a convex cylindrically curved side, said curved side bulging between said flanges, about an axis substantially parallel to said flanges, and merging into the inner surfaces thereof, said in nor surfaces being inclined with respect to one another in planes radial from said axis.

A shoe adapted to lie between a bolster guide column and the adjacent side of a bolster, comprising a web portion with flanges at the sides thereof, said web portion having a flat side adapted to engage a corresponding surface on the associated bolster and a convex side cylindrically curved about a substantially vertical axis, said curved side' bulging between said flanges and merging with the inner surfaces thereof, said irmer surfaces being inclined with respect to one another and each surface co-planar with the corresponding surface on the diagonally opposite flange of a complementary shoe at the other side of said bolster.

A spring cap formed with depending portions along the outer and inner periphery thereof adapted to center associated springs and provided shoes, said cap being notched adjacent the ends of said shelves to accommodate depending portionsof said shoes for interlocking relation therebetween, and said shelves having arcuate surfaces thereon for permitting horizipntal angular movement between said caps and an associated side frame.

16. In a railway truck, in combination with a side frame having a bolster opening defined by 76 guide columns, a bolster received in said opening, means for supporting said bolster, shoes interposed between said guide columns and bolster,
said shoes having spaced flanges overlying said guide columns and a notch in the top portion thereof intermediate said flanges, substantially coaxial engaging surfaces on said shoes and guide columns, and said bolster having lugs extending outwardly beyond the sides thereof adapted to occupy said notches for holding said shoes in place.

A lateral motion bolster having integral stop faces adjacent its ends, column shoes cooperating with said bolster adjacent each end thereof, said shoes having an outer cylindrically convex surface adapted to engage a correspondingly formed surface onan associated side frame, and 9. lug projecting from the sides of said bolster adapted to overlie each shoe for preventing the displacement thereof.

In combination with a side frame having a bolster opening defined by guide columns, a lateral motion bolster received in said opening, a spring-supported cap disposed in said opening beneath said bolster, movable means interposed between and engaging said bolster and cap, said cap having outstanding shelves at the sides thereof and notches at the ends of said shelves, shoes disposed between the sides of the bolster and said guide columns and resting on said shelves, said shoes having depending lugs occupying said cap notches, flanges on said cap embracing said shoe lugs, and said bolster having outstanding lugs adjacent the upper portion thereof and overlying said shoes to arrest the upward movement thereof.
19. In combination with a side frame having a bolster opening defined by spaced guide columns, a bolster positioned in said opening, a
spring cap disposed in said opening beneath said bolster, said bolster having lugs on the ends thereof spaced from said columns, shoes interposed between the sides of the bolster and said columns,. flanges on said shoes interposed between said columns and bolster lugs, surfaces on said bolster lugs disposed substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the side frame and adapted to cooperate with outer correspondingly formed surfaces on said shoe flanges for limiting transverse movement of said bolster with respect to the side frame, said shoe flanges and guide columns having opposedspaced surfaces substantially radial from the vertical axis of said frame, and substantially coaxial surfaces on said shoes and guide columnsto allow for an angling horizontal movement of said bolster with respect to said side frame.

In combination with a side frame having a bolsteropening defined by guide columns, said guide columns comprising transverse webs having surfaces cylindrically concave about the vertical axis of said frame-and side flanges having surfaces radial from said axis, a bolster positioned in said opening, a spring cap disposed insaid opening beneath said bolster,- resilient means interposed between said frame and cap, and shoes disposed between the sides of said bolster and said guide columns, said shoes having outstanding flanges in straddling relation with said columns and provided with surfaces radial from the vertical axis of said frame, a web portion extending between said shoe flanges having a cylindrically convex surface coaxial with said concave column surface, shelves extending outwardly of said spring cap and intersecting the vertical plane of said shoes, and surfaces on said shelves adjacent and coaxial with said concave column surfaces.
