499,443. Typewriters. AUSTIN MOTOR CO., Ltd., WHITEHOUSE, H. N., and CHARLTON, E. S. Feb. 28, 1938, No. 6195. [Class 100 (iv)] Ink - ribbon mechanism ; paper - supports ; sheet-feeding arrangements.- Hectograph carbonpaper, arranged behind a master sheet which passes under the platen of a typewriter, is fed at a slower rate than the master sheet. The arrangement greatly reduces the amount of carbon-paper employed., since the lines typed thereon may be in contact, and feed need not occur when blank spaces on the master sheet are being fed past the printing line. The carbon-paper and master sheet may be fed in the same or opposite directions, and the carbonpaper may be employed in sheet or roll form. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the carriage 10 is provided with a platen 17 consisting of a stationary sheath which is spaced from and partly surrounds a roller 12 secured to a sleeve 14 loosely mounted on a shaft 13. The master sheet 43 is fed through a guide 19 and over the platen by means of feed-rollers 20, 41 carried by spindles 21, 39 having pinions 26 which engage a pinion 27 on the shaft 13. A ratchet-wheel 29 on the shaft is operated by a pawl in connection with the usual line-spacing lever. The carbon-paper 42 passes around the roller 12 and is held in contact therewith by a spring-urged roller 44. When a carbon web is employed, it is led from a roll which is mounted on the carriage and a provided at the ends with spring-brakes. The carbon-paper is fed by means of a pawl which co-operates with a ratchet-wheel 34 on the sleeve 14 and is connected to the line-spacing lever. The types strike through a slot 33 in the platen 17 and force the master sheet into contact with the carbon-paper. When the line-spacing lever is operated, the master sheet and carbon sheet are fed at differential speeds and in opposite directions.
