To all whom it may concern: i Be it known that I, Jesse A. B; SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writin Machines, a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines of the class in which the platen is displaceable to enable work-sheets and carbons interleaved therebetween to be straightened out for adjustment relative to the platen, as set forth in the patent to Wernery & Smith, No. 1,132,055, dated March 16,1915.

The typewriting mechanism is of the usual Underwood type, andis provided with the usual appurtenances including a linespacing mechanism for moving the platen and work-sheets thereon to several wrlting llnes or line-space positions, and a detent for holding said platen in any ofits several po sitions against accidental displacement.
An object of this invention isto provide improved means for controlling, against accidental displacement, a recordsheet for receiving carbon duplicates of items that are typed upon the web forms, a carbon being provided between said webs and record-sheet and controlled in a manner similar to those interleaved between the webs. This record sheet is commonly known as a condensed Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and forms or pages of which the following is upwardly for straightening said the writing point. For

To move the platen and the work thereon to present anew writing surface to the type and the writing point, the line-spacing mechanlsm is connected to the platen by means of gearing as in said Wernery & Smith patent. When the platen is swung webs a planetary motion is imparted thereto, due to the gear which is joined to the platen axle belng rotated about a common pinion therebetween and a gear connected to the linespaclngmechanism, which is held against rotation by said platen detent. In other words, the platen when being displaced is needlessly caused to rotate about its axis, otherwise than by the line-spacing mecha nism.
I have found it advantageous to positively hold sa d platen against rotation during said displacing or swinging operation when a record-sheet is used in the machine, so as to avoid moving said record-sheet relatively to this purpose, I have provided a latch which is normally inefiective to permit the performance of line-spacingoperations when the platen is in writing platen positively against rotating relatively to the writing line and the swinging frame when displaced for adjustment of the webs. Said latch cooperates with' a clamp provided for holdin the record-sheet to the platen and illustrated and described in the application of Daniel F. Glackin, Serial No. 208,400, filed December 22, 1917. a 1
The platen being thus locked against an gular displacement, said clamp is arranged to form a gage whereby the record-sheet may be placed on the platen so that the first writing space thereon will lie at the writing point. To perform typewriting, there is provided a typewriter framework 10 and a typewriter carriage 11. mounted for lateral movement on rails of the framework. On the carriage 11 is hinged at 12 a swingable platen frame 13, in which is journaled a platen axle or shaft 14 having fast thereon a revoluble platen 1 5. Mounted at the rear of said typewriter carriage 11, and adapted to travel therewith is a subsidiary carriage 16 supported at the rear on a rail 17 and having a carbon-carriage 18 mounted thereon, slidable forwardly and rearwardly along rails 19 on said subsidiary carriage 16. The carbon-carriage 18 is provided with blades 20, carrying carbon sheets 21-interleaved bethe uppermost blade 20 and .its carbon sheet being arranged to lie bethe carriage I are then led tween said webs 22 and a record-sheet 23 (Fig. 1).

In order to actuate the platen for linespacing, there is provided a handle 31 of a line-spacing or paper-feed mechanism indicated in general at 32 (Fig. 1), including a gear or ratchet wheel 33 journaled in the framework of the typewr1tcr.-carriage 11, and having a detent roller 34 at the free end of an arm 35 pivoted at 36 to the carriage. Theroller 34 is urged against said ratchet wheel by a spring 37 to prevent overthrow of the platen 15 by the actuation of the linespacing mechanism and to hold the platen against accidental displacement in any of its several line-space positions through the intermediary of mechanism presently to be described.
The ratchet wheel 33 is fast on a shaft 40 journaled on the carriage 11, and is included in a train of gearing to the platen. The shaft 40 has a gear-wheel 41 mounted at the right end thereof, concentrically with the platen, when the latter is in normal or writing position. The gear-wheel 41 is in mesh with a pinion 42, revolubly mounted on the hinge 12, said pinion being in mesh with a gear-wheel 43 which is fast on the left end of the platen axle 14 and is adjacent to, and concentric with, the gear-wheel 41 when in normal position. It will be seen that at the actuation ofthe line-spacing mechanism 32, the ratcli'et wheel 33 will be actuated, and, through the intermediary of the shaft 40, gear-wheel 41 and pinion 42 actuate the gear-wheel 43, and therewith the platen 15 synchronously, the pinion 42 being of sufficientwidth to extend across both of the gearwheels 41 and 43.
The platen 15 .is normally held in writin Y position by latch-hooks 48 (Figs. 3) engaging pins 49 fast on the platen frame 13, the hooks 48 being mounted on a rockshaft 50 actuated by a spring 51 (Fig; 1) and provided with a handle 52, at the 'depression of which the hooks 48 may be wung clear of the pins 49 to release the platen. At this time, the platen frame 13 may be swung upwardly about its hinge 12 to a position shown in Fig. 4, in which the webs 22 are shown sufliciently straightened so that the leading edges thereon may be pulled forwardly against a gage 55 mounted on an extension 56 on a front paper-table 57 which is a part of the platen frame 13. As the webs are thus adjusted, the carbons 21 may be retracted so as to lie interleaved with a 1, 2 a'nil llll Lasagna succeeding form on the webs and so that their leading edges will be clear of the severing knife 26, by thrusting rearwardly a handleGO fast on the carbon-carnage 18 to move said carriage and carbons thereon rearwardly along the rails 19 until the leading edges of said carbon sheets may he between the writing point 011 the platen and the severing edge of the blade or knlfe 26, as in Fig. 2, when the platen 1s restored to its normal writing position, after whlch the typewritten forms of the webs may be severed, and a succeeding form may be typewritten upon.
The mechanism thus far described 1s of a a type commonly known as the Underwood at fill tant'oldtype of machine, and is of a torm substantially as illustrated and described in said Wernery & Smith patent.
It is advantageous to hold the recordsheet .23 against displacement when the webs 22 are advanced, or otherwise ad]usted, so as to hold saidrecord-sheet fined relatively to the writing line on the platen, and so as to afford a condensed record ot the items typed upon the webs.
For this purpose, there 1s provlded a paper-clamp 65 in the form of a bar or rock-shaft journaled at 66, Figs. 1 to 5, at either side of, the swingable frame 13. The clamp 65 has a flat surface 67 termed there on. Fig. 5, extending the ent re length of the platen and in close proximity thereto, to aitord .suiiicient space therebetween and the platen when said clamp 1s opened, to perinit the passage of one or more record-sheets 23. This form of paper-clamp 1S lllustrated and described in said application, Serlal lilo. 208,400. The clamp 65 is normally n 1neffective position and is positively held 1n that position by a lever 68 fast near the left end thereof, Figs. 1 to 5. =Sa1d lever en tends rearwardly and is cam-shaped at its free end as at 69, Fig. 5, and normally bears against the rear paper-shelf 24, when the platen and associated parts are in their normal positions.
To close the clamp and to hold the lever to the paper-shelf 24, there is provided a spring 70, Figs. 1 to 5, which constantly urges the clamp to effective positlon, as seen in Figs. 3 and t. Qne end of sald spring is attached to a p1n71 fast on the swingable frame 13; and the other end is connected to an extension 7201* the lever 68 which extends in an opposite directlon thereto, to urge the clamp 65 and lever 68 in counterclockwise direction, so that the rear edge of the surface 67 will be moved to clamp the record-sheet 23 to the platen 15 when said spring is released.
It is advantageous when placing a recordsheet 23 into the machine to guide the leading edge of said record-sheetto the clamp.
For this purpose,-there is provided at the lower end of the tront-paper-table 57 a guide 75 in the form of an extension of said table, Figs. 1 to 5, arranged so as to extend into the path of the record-sheet 23, in such a manner as to guide and deflect the leading edge of said record-sheet when in serted into the machine so as to pass behind the paper-table 57 while the webs 22 may pass in front thereof. The record-sheet is oreferably inserted when the platen frame 13 is in its abnormal or Fig. 4 position, with the webs 2-2 in the Fig. 4 and Fig. 6 position, at which time the record-sheet may be inserted at the introductory side of the platen, and the leading-edge thereof guided to wedge into the bight of the clamp and the platen by the guide 75 and by an auxiliary guiding portion 76, Fig. 6, contiguous -with the guide 75 and formedon the rock shaft 28. This will place the recordsheet so that the portion thereof first to be written upon will be broughtto the writing line along the platen.
sheet beyond the clamp, the clamp may be against the tension of the spring 70, and by manually adjusting the sheet 23 to the de sired position. The platen may then be returned to its normal writing position and automatically locked in place by the latches 4:8, and the clamp automatically moved to inefiective position, thereby releasing the record-sheet for line-space feeding thereof. 'When thus returning the platen the lever 68 strikes against the paper-shelt 24, which, coacting with its cam 69, swings the clamp 65 in clockwise direction against the tension of its spring 70 to release the record-sheet 23 and to permit said record-sheet and webs 22 to be advanced in unison in linespacing direction when the line-spacing mechanism 32 is actuated.
It will be noted that said clamp 65 is adapted to detain a worksheet of any width within the capacity oi the machine, and to clamp said sheet in any position along the platen without any special adjustment of overlie the said last line of writing on the record-sheet.- This result may also be obtained by actuating the line-spacing. mechanism after the platen has been restored to its normal position subsequent to a' writing If it is desired to advance the record- 1 int and severing operation, the printed forms on the webs and the gage 55 being adjusted accordingly.
It will be seen by reference to said Wernery & Smith patent and to said Glackin application, that the platen 15 is subject to a planetary motion when being swung from and to normal position, and that in said Glackin application the spring-actuatedroller-detent which cooperates with the linespacing mechanism is manually silenced when the platen frame is swungfor adjustment to avoid the rotative movement of the platen on its axle.
I have found it advantageous to overcome said planetary motion or rotative movement by automatically detaining the platen against angular movement about its shaft 14 when the platen is swung out of its normal position, so as to insure the recordsheet 23 against any accidental displacement whatsoever. Said angular movement of-the platen 15 about its shaft 14, when being displaced, is caused by the gear wheel 43 being bodily swung about the hinge 12 while in mesh with the pinion 42 which is being held stationary by the spring-pressed detent 34, 35, through the intermediary of the gear wheels 33 and 41. This swinging of the platen will cause a clockwise rotation of the platen when swung from its normal position, and a. counter-clockwise rotation of the platen when returned to its normal position.
To overcome this planetary motion, there is provided alatch, indicated in general at 7 8, mounted on the swingable platen frame 13, to slide thereon radially of the platen into effective position when the platen is displaced, and into mesh with the gear wheel 43 to positively hold the platen against rotation. To guide the latch 78 in its movement into and out of effective position, there is provided at its upper end a slot 79, Figs. 1 to 5, in engagement with a pin 80 fast on the platen frame 13, and arranged to guide and retain the upper end of said latch. The lower end of the latch '78 is guided by a fork 81 straddling a collar 82 on the platen shaft 14, and is held against lateral displacement by projections 83, said projections being adapted to extend in the space between the ear wheel 43 and the left end of the swinga le platen frame 13.
To urge the latch 7 8 to effective position, there is fast thereon a pin 86, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, to which is attached one end of a spring 87, the other end of which is attached to a pin 88 fast on the platen frame 13, said spring being so arranged as to draw said latch 78 inwardly, so that a tooth or detent 89 thereon, normally extending above the gear wheel 43, may be drawn into the path of said gear wheel and between. the teeth thereof when said latch is released, to positively connect said gear wheel to the platen frame 13 to prevent any rotation of said gear wheel and the'platen relative to said frame, Figs. 3 and 4, thereby causin the platen to swing in unison with said frame and not to move relatively thereto.
. To hold the latch 78 in its normal ineffective position with the tooth 89 thereof out of engagement with the gear or rack 43, there is provided a connection between said latch and the clamp 65, whereby said latch is controlled by said clamp.
For this purpose, there is fast at the left end of the clamp or rock-shaft 65 an arm 92 placed without the frame 13 and extending rearwardly, so that its free end underlies an offset 93, Figs. 1 to 5, formed on the latch 78. The latch 78, arm 92 and clamp 65 are so arranged that when the clamp 65 is positively held in ineffective position by the lever 68 co-acting with the paper shelf 24-, the latch 78 will also be positively held in ineffective position against the tension of its spring 87, but when said lever 68 is released, the arm 92 will swing downwardly in counter-clockwise direction with the cam 65, thereby releasing the latch 78 to permit the spring 87 to draw the tooth 89 thereof into mesh with the gear wheel 43, said gear wheel being so arranged that a tooth space thereon will lie opposite the tooth 89 when the platen 15 is in any of its several line space positions, the parts being so arranged that said engagement will take place prior to any planetary rotation of the platen 15 and will prevent such rotation.
It will be noted that the clamp 65 may be closed by the latch spring 87 through the intermediary of the offset 93 and arm 92, but it is advantageous to provide auxiliary actuating means for said clamp since greater care will be required with a single actuating means in adjusting said clamp and said tooth relatively to its gear, particularly when record-sheets 23 are employed of such thickness that only a slight movement of the clam 65 will be required to hold the sheets to the platen. This amount of movement may, under abnormal conditions, be insufficient for effecting a complete engagement of the tooth 89 with the gear wheel 43. If the parts are adjusted to the use of very thick record-sheets 23, the tooth 89 may move to its extreme inward position before the clamp 65 becomes effective in case a thin recordsheet is used.
Any fault in this direction could easily be overcome by the employment of deep tooth spaces on the gear wheel 43 and little 1 clearance between the detent 89 and said gear wheel. With this construction a slight movement of the clamp 65 and latch 78 will serve to lock the platen 15 when a greater thickness of record-sheets are used, and will permit a long stroke of the slide or latch 78 when a thin record-sheet 23 is used.

It will also be noted that when a recordsheet 23 is not completely used up when the' webs are used up or a new Web is to be inserted into the machine for other reasons, the clam will hold the record-sheet 23 against displacement when the webs 22 are withdrawn from the machine, and that a new set of webs 22 are inserted thereinto, so that a record of items typed upon new web forms may be copied on the record-sheet 23, without any break in the continuity of the writing thereon.
Variations maybe resorted to withinthe scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the com-' bination with a revoluble platen, of a displaceable support for said platen, normally ineffective means to hold a worksheet against the platen, and means, normally ineffective, for holding the platen against rotation relative to its support.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of means for displacing said platen bodily, a normally'ineffectivc clamp, means for rendering said clamp effective to hold a worksheet when said platen is displaced, and means, operatively connected with said clamp, for, holding the platen against rotation relative to said clamp.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combina tion with a revoluble platen, of means for swinging said platen bodily, a normally-hr effective clamp, means for rendering said clamp effective to hold a work-sheet when said platen is swung, and means for holding said platen against rotation relative to said clamp.
4i. lln a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolu le platen and a movable platen frame to enable the platen to be moved from its normal positionto an abnormal position, of means, normally in effective, for holding a work-sheet to prevent displacement thereof relative to the platen when the latter is moved from its normal position, means for holding the platen against rotation, relative to said platen frame, when moved from its normal position. and means for releasing both of said holding means when the platen is returned to its normal position.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and means for feeding a record sheet, a web and an interleaved carbon sheet thereabout, of means,
including a swinging; platen-support, for 7 moving said platen away from said feeding means to enable adjustment of said web and carbon sheet, a normally ineffective clamp for holding said record sheet against said platen, a normally ineffective means for holding the platen against rotation relative to said support, and means controlled by said swinging means for rendering said clamp and platen-holding means effective.
6. In a typewriting machine, the com bination of a revoluble platen and means, including a platen frame, for displacing said platen from its normal position, of means to feed a record sheet, webs and inter leaved carbon sheets about said platen, a normally ineffective clamp to hold said record sheet against the platen, controlling means to rendersaid clamp effective, a normally ineffective means for holding said platen against rotation with respect to the platen frame, and a connection between said clamp-controlling means and said platenholding means, whereby said clamp and said Jlaten-holding means will be rendered effective and ineffective concomitantly.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a movable platen frame to enable displacement of said platen from its normal position, of means to support work-sheets in engagement with the platen when said platen is in normal position, a clamp movable to position to retain a work-sheet against the platen, means urging said clamp to effective positlon, means, including a latch, for holding said platen against rotation relative to said frame, means urging said latch to effective position, means effective whensaid platen is in normal position to retain said clamp and latch in ineffective positions, and releasable meansto retain said platen frame in normal position, and thereby maintain both said clamp and said latch in ineffective positions.
8. The combination with a revoluble platen, means for supporting work-sheets and interleaved carbon sheets in engagement therewith, and a frame upon which the platen is mounted for displacement from said supporting means to permit straightening and relative adjustment of said work-sheets and carbon sheets. of a clamp mounted upon said frame to hold a worksheet against the platen,'and means for positively holding the platen against rotation, relative to said frame, when displaced.
9. The combination of a revoluble' platen, a swinging frame upon which it is mountcd for swingal'ile displacement, a clamp upon said frame to hold a worksheet against the platen, means to press said clamp against the platen, means for retaining said clamp in ineffective position, means rendered effective upon swinging said frame from normal position for holding said platen against rotation on said frame, and means, brought into action by the swinging of said frame, to render said retaining means effective and permit said clamp to press the work-sheet against the platen.

13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of feed rolls cooperating therewith, means, including a latch normally holding said platen to the feed rolls, means for holding a work-sheet against the platen, a paper shelf at the in-' troductory side of the platen, and means, including a lever cooperating with said paper shelf, to render said holding means ineffective when said latch is in normal position.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble plate-n, of feed rolls cooperating therewith, means, including a latch, normally holding said platen to the LQQMQQ feed rolls, a paper shelf in the rear of said platen, a clamp for holding a work-sheet against said platen, a spring normally tending to make said clamp effective to hold the work-sheet, and a lever on said clamp cooperating with said paper shelf to move the clamp to ineffective position when said platen and said feed rolls are'brought together to enable said latch to become effective.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a swingable platen frame, whereby the platen may be swung upwardly from its normal position, a clamp, normally ineffective, for holding a record-sheet to prevent its displacement relative to the platen when the latter is swung from its normal position, means, including a latch, for holding the platen against rotation, with reference to said platen frame, when moved from its normal position, and means for rendering said clamp and latch ineffective when the platen is returned to its normal position.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of a swinging platen frame whereby the platen may be swung upwardly from its normal position, a clamp, normally ineffective, for holding a record-sheet to prevent its displacement relative to the platen when the latter is swung from its normal position, means, including a latch, for holding the platen against rotation relative to said frame when swung to its normal position, and means, including a lever having operative connections with said clamp and said latch, for releasing the same when the platen is returned to its normal position.
17. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen, of means, including a platen frame, for displacing said platen bodily, means, normally ineffective, for holdin a work-sheet to the platen when the latter is being displaced, normally-ineffective means for holding the platen against rotation, relative to its frame, means for moving said platen-holding means to effective position, and connections between said sheet-holding means and said platen-holding means for moving the latter to ineffective position.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and feeding engagement with the platen, means, includlid titl

20. The combination with a revoluble platen and feeding means to maintain worksheets and carbons in operative engagement with the platen when the latter is in normal position, of a frame upon which the platen is mounted for displacement to permit straightening and relative adjustment of work-sheets and carbons, a clamp effective along the entire length of said platen to hold a work-sheet against the platen, and means, including a latch at one end of said clamp and cooperating therewith, for positively holding the platen against rotation relative to said frame when the latter is displaced. The combination with a revoluble platen, and work-sheet-guiding means with which it cooperates while in normal position, of a frame upon which the platen is mounted for displacement to permit straightening and relative adjustment of work-sheets and carbons, a clamp in the form of a bar mounted upon said frame for holding a work-sheet to the platen, means,
including a latch slidably mounted on said frame, for holding the platen against rotation, and means for automatically rendering said clamp and latch effective and ineffective.
22. The combination with a revoluble platen, and work-sheet-guiding means with which it cooperates while in normal position, of a frame upon which the platen is mounted for bodily displacement to permit straightening and relative adjustment of work-sheets and carbons, means upon said frame for holding the platen against rotation, and means for automatically rendering said platen-holding means eflective.
23. The combination with a revolnble platen, andworksheet-guiding means with which it cooperates while in normal position, of a frame upon which the platen is mounted for displacement to permit straightening and relative adjustn'ient of worksheets and carbons, means upon said frame for holding the platen against rotation, means for automatically rendering said platen-holding means effective when the platen is displaced, and means for automatically rendering said platen-holding means ineffective when the platen is replaced. 24. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revolnble platen, of means, including a movable platen frame, whereby the platen may be moved from its normal position, normally ineffective locking means adapted to lock said platen against rotation relative to said frame, means for actuating said platen, including a ratchet wheel, driving connections between said ratchet wheel and said platen whereby displacement of said frame will tend to effect relative rota tion between said ratchet wheel and said platen, a yieldable detent for preventing accidental displacement of said ratchet wheel, and means for locking said platen against rotation relative to said platen frame, the yieldable detent being overcome by said look ing means when said frame is displaced.
25. The combination with a revoluble platen and a platen frame for displacing said platen bodily, of a carriage on which said frame is mounted, mechanism for linespacing the platen including a ratchet wheel on the carriage, a gear wheel on the platen frame and connections between said wheels whereby a relative rotation therebetween will be effected by displacement of said platen, a spring detent cooperating with said ratchet wheel for holding said platen at any line-space position, and norinally-ineifet-tive means cooperating with said gear wheel for positively holding said platen against dis placement by said line-spacing mechanism, said plateirholding means being adapted to overcome said detent.
36. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revolnble platen, of a worksheet on said platen, a normally-incitedive clamp for holding said work-sheet to the platen, means, including a normally-ineffective latch, for holding the platen against angular movement, and means for holding said clamp and latch against accidental displacement from ineffective position.
37. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of paper-feeding mechanism for feeding webs and a record-sheet to and around the platen, a clamp for holding' said record-sheet to the platen, a paperrtable at the delivery side of the platen for said webs, and a guide at the lower end of said paper-table for guiding said record-sheet to the clamp.
38. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluhle platen, of a frame for displacing said platen bodily, means for actuating the platen, means including a clamp for holding a work-sheet against the platen, whereby the work-sheet may be adjusted to bear a predetermined relation to the platen, and means for holding the platen against angular displacement with reference to said frame, said work-sheet-adjusting means cooperating with said platen-holding means to hold the work-sheet against displacement when the platen frame is dis placed after the platen has been actuated in a writing operation.
39. In a typewritingmachine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a worksheet thereon, of a clamp for detaining the work-sheet, a latch for detaining the platen, means, including a spring, for moving said latch and said clamp to effective positions, for moving the latch and clamp to efi'eotive and an auxiliary spring for moving the positions. clamp to eflective position.
