Abstract
499,277. Rolling screw threads. WOLSELEY MOTORS, Ltd., and GOULD, G. June 11, 1938, No. 17380. [Class 83 (iv)] A revolving rod 13 is screw-threaded by moving it into contact within a pair of threaded rolls 1, 2 freely rotatable in a bracket 5, adjustably pivoted at 7 on a holder 14, which may be pushed in by the feed slide of an automatic machine. A screw 9 adjusts the degree of pivoting of the bracket 5 in co-operation with a spring 11 which allows the rolls to float. The roll pass may be adjusted by rotating the eccentric shaft 3 of the top roll, the shaft then being locked in position by a pin 18 which holds in position the quadrant 16 fixed on the shaft 3. Axial floating movement of the roll carrier is provided by spring washers 20 on the pin 7 located between the carrier lugs 8 and the holder 6. The top roll has additional axial floating movement by spring washer 19 (not shown) on its shaft. The length of the threaded part of the rolls is approximately equal to the length of the axial thread to be formed so that no traverse of the rolls along the work bar is necessary.
