Abstract
499,241. Electrodeposition of copper. LANGBEIN PFANHAUSER-WERKE AKT.- GES. Feb. 22, 1938, No. 5483. Convention date, Feb. 22, 1937. [Class 41] During the electrodeposition of copper on a rotating cylinder, the deposit is smoothed by an agate roller which is fed to and fro axially, the roller being mounted so as to be free to adjust its position relative to the cylinder and its direction of rolling automatically. The coated cylinders are etchable for use as printing rollers. In the apparatus shown, the roller 16 is mounted on a carriage which is reciprocated on a spindle 5 by means not shown, the feed being about one third of the total path for each revolution of the cylinder. The carriage comprises a slide 6 carrying an arm 8 in which is mounted a double bearing 9 rotatable about a bolt 10. In this bearing is mounted a rotatable spindle 13 carrying a fork 15 in which the roller 16 is mounted, the spindle 13 also being axially adjustable. The fork 15 is bent so that the axis of the spindle 13 is tangential to the roller ; tilting of the carriage by axial movement of the roller is thereby avoided. The arm 8 is loaded by weights 12 mounted on a bolt 11. The roller and its carriage may be swung away from the cylinder as shown at the right of the drawing. The roller 16 and the cylinder 4 are kept wetted by a sponge 18 supplied by a tube 17. The cylinder is rubbed by stationary stones 19 at the edges. The roller 16 comprises a cylindrical middle portion about 3 cms. wide, curving away for about 2 cms. on either side. The anodes 3 are mounted on holders 2. During the first third of the period of deposition the roller is unloaded ; it is then loaded with a weight of about 10 kg. After completion of the deposition the roller is passed several times over the rotating cylinder with the load increased to 20-30 kg. The current is then switched on for a short time in the reverse direction. During the last half-hour of deposition the current-density is reduced to half its original value.
