1430498 Coating apparatus SUN CHEMICAL CORP 14 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 11450/74 Heading B2L In an apparatus with spindles 20 on which cylindrical containers are conveyed along a feed path through a coating station, the station includes a subframe 25 which is removable as a unit and supports coating control, transfer and applicator rolls 31, 32, 33 which are adjustable independantly on the sub frame 25. As shown cans pass a multicolour printing press 22 with a rotating image-transfer mat or blanket 21 and the coating station on the spindles 20, and are transferred to suction cups on wheel 27 and thence to horizontal pins 29 carried through a curing oven. Rotation of a hand wheel 44 (Fig. 2) pivots an eccentric sleeve (76) (Fig. 8 not shown) supporting the roll 31 to adjust the nip 34 between the rolls 31, 32 and rotation of a handwheel 36 pivots the frame 46 about a shaft 47 to adjust the nip 35 between the transfer and applicator rolls 32, 33. Rotation of a third handwheel 39 adjusts the nip 38 between the cans and the resiliently surfaced roll 33 by rotating a threaded shaft 79 (Fig. 6) and hence moving the internally threaded support 81 carrying the shaft 42 of the roll in the sense of the arrow 43 (Fig. 2). Means for adjusting the parallelism of the rolls are also described and illustrated. To avoid coating of a spindle 20 when no can is present an eccentric shaft 85 is rotated automatically to drop the support 81.
