Abstract

499,197. Transformers. BAGNALL, R. I., and FOSTER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. June 15, 1937, No. 16597. [Class 38 (ii)] In an on-load transformer tap changing arrangement the tap changing switch is arranged in the form of a commutator, the tappings being connected to the segments 2, Fig. 1, mounted on a support 1, current being collected by means of a brush 11 which is made wide enough to bridge the insulation between adjacent contacts and has a non- uniform specific resistance such that the resistance of the brush to the flow of load current is less than its resistance to the flow of circulating current which occurs when the brush bridges a pair of elements. Fig. 3 shows a circuit arrangement whereby the voltage at the output terminals OT can be varied from zero to a maximum. The transformer winding 6 has one half tapped and connected to the tap changing switch 2, 3. With the switch 22 on contact 1 the voltage can be varied from zero to one half maximum by anticlockwise movement of the arm 12 and with switch 22 on contact 2 the voltage can be increased to the maximum by clockwise movement of the arm 12. A polyphase arrangement is described. It is stated that the commutator may be helical in form.
