Abstract

498,642. Flying tops. SCHWANKE, E. March 21, 1938, Nos. 8621 and 8622. Convention dates, March 20, 1937 and April 8, 1937. [Class 132 (iii)] A flying top or helicopter toy is characterized in that a lifting screw with at most four wings is secured to a spindle in V-position, that is to say, with the wings slanting upwards at an angle substantially less than a right-angle to the central axis, and that the spindle is upwardly extended within the V-position beyond the fixing point of the wings and is formed at its upper end as a handle for imparting rotation and the desired direction of flight (trajectory) with the aid of the fingers of one hand. The blades 3 which have an angle of incidence of 10-25‹ and are inclined at 10-25‹ to the horizontal may have slots 4 to increase the lift and may be protected by a ring 6 attached to the blades. The spindle 1 may be hollow to carry various objects and the top may simulate a butterfly or similar object. It may be made by casting or moulding of metal, celluloid, synthetic resin or the like.
