[Class 28 (ii)] Apparatus for washing fruits or vegetables comprises a glass vessel containing a fruitholding basket and spraying nozzles for sprinkling the goods. As shown, the glass vessel 1 is supported on a base 2 formed with a funnel-like part 3 leading to a waste-water outlet 4 covered by a screen 5. Vertical rods 7 secured to a flange 6 of the base, secure a cover 8 in position, the cover being formed with a central hopper 9 which supports a frame 10 in which the basket 11, inserted through the hopper 9, is carried. Vertical spray pipes 15 are arranged around the basket. A hook 14 supports the basket when not in use. The drainage of water from the basket is assisted by the conical bottom 24. In a modification, the glass vessel is closed at one end and is arranged horizontally, the basket being supported on two spaced rods projecting horizontally into the vessel. Water is supplied and exhausted through tubes which form the support of the apparatus, the water being led to a hollow casing to which the vessel is secured, and from which horizontal spray pipes project into the vessel. The casing has an opening through which the basket is admitted, this opening being provided with a door pivoted at its lower edges. The door has bars on its inner face which assist in the insertion of the basket, and retain it in position when inserted. In a further modification, the hollow casing is replaced by a closure member for the vessel, having an inclined door-closed shoot for the insertion of the basket which may have a cup-like extension which serves as a handle and for the reception of kernels, peels and other inedible parts when the basket is used at table. The baskets may have small cups on their upper edges, and small balls on their undersides, so that, when the baskets are stacked, the cups and balls interengage. The glass vessel is formed with a waste water discharge. In another modification, the basket is arranged to be rotated, by an external crank, on a vertical axis.
