[Class 120 (iii)] A band of continuous filaments is cut into short lengths forming a coherent band of staple fibres by a number of staggered cuts, the band being fed over a hard steel member or plate by means of two pairs of rollers, one pair being immediately before and the other immediately behind the plate, and beneath by a number of blades arranged in a supporting block above the plate and actuated by a corresponding number of cams arranged on a rotating shaft so as to reciprocate into and out of a slot or slots cut in the upper surface of the plate. The slot or slots in the plate may be at right-angles to the direction of motion of the band of filaments across the plate or they may be obliquely inclined thereto ; when a single slot is used it extends the whole width of the plate and the blades are reciprocated at different times and when a number of slots are used they are stepped or staggered if at right-angles to the direction of motion of the band of filaments or, if the slots are oblique they may be parallel or inclined to each other as well as to the direction of motion of the band. As shown, parallel cutting blades 1 are used with a corresponding number of slots 2 in the plate 3 and are each supported by a push rod 7 passing through a block 8 and carrying a wheel or roller 9 engaged by a cam 10 on the rotating shaft 11. The cams are so disposed that adjacent blades are reciprocated at different times and the opposite ends of adjacent blades lie on lines parallel to the direction of motion of the band 4 of filaments which is fed forward by the pairs of rollers 5, 6. Springs may be arranged to move the blades out of the slots after having been pushed into them by the cams and the rollers 9 may be kept in contact with the cams by springs.
