Abstract

497,894. Sewing-machines. TILLETT, F. G. Feb. 4, 1938, No. 3636. [Class 112] In a machine of the kind in which the work is clamped on a frame movable relative to the needle for the sewing of a design, such as is described in Specification 354,320, the clamp is controlled by a fluid-pressure device, preferably mounted on the frame and operated by compressed air. In the form shown, the clamp is carried by a divided arm D pivoted to the movable frame C and pressed to the engaging position by springs D' ; the clamp member enters a recess in the work-plate to stretch the material. The tail of the arm D is depressed, to release the clamp, by the piston of a compressed air cylinder E mounted on the frame C. The machine is also provided with means for stopping the machine with the needle clear of the work, comprising a cylinder F containing a piston connected as shown to the flywheel of the machine ; this piston normally works freely in the cylinder, but is checked and moved to its uppermost position when compressed air is supplied to the cylinder. The machine is driven by a motor through a spring-engaged clutch N, and the control rod for the clutch is also connected to a lever G actuating a thread-tension device, so that the thread is slackened when the clutch is disengaged. The engagement of the clutch is controlled by a cylinder P under control of a valve R operated by a lover S which also operates a valve K controlling the cylinder F. In the stopping position, air is supplied under pressure to the cylinder F and exhausted from the cylinder P, so that the clutch is disengaged by its spring; in the running position the clutch is held engaged by pressure in the cylinder P. The clamp cylinder E is controlled by a separate foot valve E<1> with a restricted exhaust passage. Instead of being connected to the clutch control mechanism, the tension release lever G may be actuated from the tail of the clamp lever D. Liquid under pressure may be used in place of compressed air, the cylinders E, F, P then being exhausted to a reservoir. The frame C has a groove or slot C<1> for guiding a tape to be worked upon. A lamp socket A is provided beneath the upper part of the machine body. Specifications 422,483 and 497,893 also are referred to.
