Abstract

1495836 Sewing - machines BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 21 Feb 1975 [22 Feb 1974] 7499/75 Addition to 1446238 Heading D1G An automatic sewing machine has a workpiece moving means and a variable needlethread tensioning means 16 adapted to apply different tensions for normal and abnormal stitches automatically in accordance with movement of the workpiece, as disclosed in the Parent Specification, and is modified to provide for embroidery stitching by having an extra, low, tension setting and by including means 19, 22, 23 to set the lowermost position of the reciprocating presser foot 11 to clear either normal or embroidery stitching as required, the tensioning and presser foot positioning means being operated by automatic control means in timed relationship with the workpiece moving means. The tensioning means comprises a pulley 35 round which the thread 15 passes and a fibre braking washer acted on by an adjustable screw 36 and an outwardly biassed plunger 24 which is operated in turn by a lever 25 having three positions corresponding to normal, abnormal and embroidery stitching, respectively. The positions of the lever are defined by air cylinders 28, 29 and stops 32 and 37. A support rod 21 of the presser foot 11 is engaged by an abutment 19 to limit its downward travel, the abutment being movable by an air cylinder 22 between two positions corresponding to the required presser foot lowermost positions for normal and embroidery stitching, respectively. The air cylinders 22, 28, 29 are controlled by signals from a control console which also generates signals controlling motors for moving a workpiecesupporting pallet.
