MATTINGLY AUTOMATIC PRESSURE FOOT ADJUSTING DEVICE Filed March 26, 1954 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented July 16, 1935 UNITED STATES AUTOMATIC PRESSURE FOOT ADJUSTING 'DEVICE Scott C. Mattingly, Cloverport, Ky.
Application March 26, 1934, Serial No. 717,472
2 Claims.
This invention relates to an automatic pressure foot adjusting device for patch machines and has for the primary object the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be easily vand quickly rendered operative or inoperative and when operated or connected to the operating lever of the machine, the pressure foot of said machine will be caused to raise between each stitch made by the machine so that the material or goods may be moved laterally as well, as advanced to produce a stitching in the goods of the cross type whereby two pieces of goods may be secured together without overlapping the edges thereof.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation illustrating a patch machine with an attachment ap plied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view, partly in section showing the presser foot lowered with the lowering of the needle by the operating lever.
Figure 3 is an end elevation showing the needle elevated and also the presser foot by the attachment.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the needle lowered and also the presser foot by the attachment.
V Figure 5 is a perspective view illustrating a supporting bracket.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Figure 7 is a perspective view illustrating acam lever.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating an actuating lever for the cam lever.
ment to the needle bar 3, the needle being indicated by the character 4. Associated with the needle 4 is a presser foot 5 operated in the usual manner by a mechanism of the machine (not shown). The presser foot may be raised by the customary lever. 6 so that goods may be placed under the presser foot. To permit making of cross stitching with a machine of this character an attachment is applied thereto and forms the subject matter of the present invention and consists of a casing-like bracket I mounted on the machine, as shown in Figure 2, by screws or like fasteners already employed in the construction of the machine. A cam-like lever 8 is pivoted to the bracket and one end thereof fits or engages under the arm 9 of the thread tensioning and guide means ID. The arm 9 is fixed at one end to the presser foot bar. Pivoted to the bracket I is an actuating lever H having a cam face l2 enagageable with a cam face l3 on the cam lever B. The lever l I extends out of the casing and has pivoted thereto an adjustable connecting rod I4 which may be varied asto length and is apertured to removably receive a pin carried by a clamp N5, the latter being mounted to the operating lever 2 of the machine. The connecting rod when applied to the pin l5 and the lever 2 in operation, the presser foot and the needle will be caused to raise and lower. It is to be understood that the presser foot and needle move downwardly together and the needle is the first to move upwardly leaving the presser foot down to hold the 'material during the forming of the tie in the needle reaches its uppermost position so that the operator may move the goods laterally as well as advance the goods and thereby produce cross stitching in the goods. When not desiring to employ the machine for making cross stitching the connecting rod is disengaged from the pin |5 and the machine may then operate in the usual manner. It is to be noted with the attachment in operation on the machine the thread tensioning guide means will be automatically released from the thread on each time of the raising of the presser foot bar so that the operator in moving the goods may obtain the thread from the machine freely.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a patch machine having an operating lever and a presser foot bar, a bracket secured to said machine, an actuating lever pivoted to the bracket, means forconnecting and disconnecting said actuating lever to and from the operating lever, a cam face formed on said actuating lever, a cam lever pivoted to the bracket and engaging said cam face and the presser foot bar to raise the latter.
2. In combination with a patch machine having a thread tensioning device connected to a 7 presser foot bar and an operating lever connected to aneedle bar, a bracket secured to said machine, an actuating lever pivoted to the bracket, a connecting rod pivoted to said actuating lever and presser foot bar to raise the latter and to release the thread tensioning device on a thread.
SCOTT C. MATIINGLY.
