[Class 100 (i)] Sheets are fed to a printing or like machine in an overlapping stream which is advanced at a variable speed so as to slow down the sheets 2 as they reach the front stops 3 of the machine. The sheets are separated from a pile 4 by means of a rear separator 6 and are advanced from the pile by a forwarding device 7. The overlapping stream is fed forward by means of a driven feed roller 18 and idler 19, and by feed belt 8 passing over pulleys 10, 9. The radius of the pulley 9 plus the thickness of the belt 8 is equal to the radius of the roller 18, so that the peripheral speeds of the roller and belt are the same. The shafts of the pulley 9 and roller 18 are geared together, and the drive for both is obtained from a gear-wheel 31 mounted on a shaft 32 which is the driving- shaft of the feed mechanism. The wheel 31 and its associated wheels are duplicated at each side of the machine. To obtain a variable drive, the gear 31 drives gears 30, 29 mounted in a link 33 pivoted about the shaft of gear 31, and the gear 29 is geared to a gear 16 on the shaft of the roller 18 by means of a gear 43 mounted in links 21, 26 pivoted respectively to the shafts of the gears 29, 16. The gear 30 is formed with a slot 37 in which is adjustably secured a crank pin 38 connected to a pitman 41 pivoted at 42 to the machine frame. The crank 38 causes the link 33 to oscillate about the shaft 32 and so a variable motion is given to the gear 30 owing to its rolling to and fro along a portion of the periphery of gearwheel 31. The gear-wheel 43 also moves to and fro over the gear 16, so that the final movement given to the roller 18 is a variable one, and it can be adjusted by varying the position of the crank 38.
