Abstract
497,677. Reinforcing conductors; direct connections between conductors. COPPERWELD STEEL CO. June 23, 1937, No. 17520. Convention date, July 10, 1936. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] A reinforcement for an overhead conductor 11, Fig. 2, at a point where it is attached to an insulator, a clamp or other support, or at a point where a tapping is taken from the conductor, or where a weight, such as a lightning arrester, is suspended from the conductor, comprises a hand-drawn wire 10 in the form of a helix of sufficient elastic deformation to permit it manually to be disposed about the conductor, the internal diameter of the helix being slightly less than that of the conductor and the pitch of the helix being at least four times the diameter of the conductor. The wire may be of round or square section. Fig. 6 shows the reinforcement applied to the conductor at a point at which the conductor is secured to an insulator by a tie-wire 12. In modified forms the separate tie-wire is dispensed with and the conductor is secured to the insulator by the reinforcement alone which is formed with an initially straight portion or portions adapted to be looped around the insulator. The straight portions are preferably annealed to facilitate manipulation. Fig. 8 shows the reinforcement applied to the conductor at a point where a tapping wire 23 is clamped thereto by a clamp 24. In another form no clamp is used and the reinforcement itself is branched from the conductor to constitute the tapping wire. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, a bight 25 at the end of a conductor is reinforced by the helical wire 10, whilst Fig. 10 shows an arrangement wherein a bight 15 is formed on the end of the conductor by an initially straight portion 26a of the reinforcement.
