[Classes 44 and 65 (ii)] (Also in Group XVII] In a filing cabinet provided with a cover 17, Fig. 1, which can be slid from the closed position and then swung ound so as to hang adjacent the back wall 13, the mechanism for swinging the cover includes L-shaped levers 35 of which the pivots move towards the top edge of wall 13 during the rocking movement. The cover slides on rollers 29 and also carries rollers 28 which move in guide-ways 24, and as the cover approaches the fully open position, tongues 51 projecting from brackets 52 carrying the rollers 28 engage slots 47 formed in a channel member 44 joining the ends of the vertical limbs of the levers 35. If the cover is now swung round by means of one of the handles 67, 68, the levers are also swung round and spring - pressed pawls 53, which are pivoted on the levers 35 and are normally held down by lugs on the pawls pressing against the lower rails of the guide-ways 24, turn and engage the brackets 52 to lock the cover to the levers 35. Each one of the latter carries a toothed segment 38, a plain segment 36, and a roller 39 which engage respectively a rack 34 and flanges on channelshaped fixtures secured in recesses in the side walls of the cabinet. The levers 35 carry rollers 64 engaged in guides on a tray 62 whereby, as the cover is swung round, the tray is raised. The tray is also mounted on lazy-tong levers 63. The front, back, and longitudinal edges of the cover are formed with tongues, such as 10, 16, which engage corresponding recesses in the side walls, and the recesses may be provided with sealing strips. The cabinet is made up of an outer sheet-metal casing with a lining of fire-resistant material, and it is supported on a tand 4 which is provided with a cushion for he cover to abut against in the open position. A spring-pressed dog 69, Fig. 7, pivoted on a bracket carried by the cover, serves to prevent the cover from being pushed back by engaging the back wall of the cabinet, but by pressing on a button 77, the dog is raised to clear the top edge of the back wall. The button consists of an upper part of low heat conductivity and a metal lower part, and an ordinary key lock is provided to lock the button in the raised position shown.
