[Class 55 (i)] In a narrow coking chamber for low or medium temperature coking, the charge is consolidated by compacting screws which are lowered into the chamber which is then substantially filled, the screws being then rotated to effect a downward pressure as they are withdrawn upwardly. Coking chambers 13, 14 are disposed between heated walls 10, 11, 12 which can be moved apart to facilitate discharge, and which may have vertical ribs to divide the chambers into vertical compartments. Coal is fed from a jig feeder 30 and is tamped down into the coking chambers by compacting screws 23 carried by rods 35 suspended from a platform 34, the rods being rotated by gearing 36 and passing through bearings 41 mounted on a platform 42 suspended by chains 43 from platform 34. The rods may have fins 40 to feed the charge downwardly. In operation, the platform 34 is lowered by motor 45, gearing 51, and cables 48, until the guiding platform 42 rests on the oven, after which the platform 34 above is lowered, the suspension chains being wound up on self-winding drums 46 rotated by helical springs until the screws reach the chamber bottom. The chambers are then filled with coal up to the girders 15, and the screws rotated by motor 38, the platform 34 being gradually raised, and the coal being tamped down. After discharge, any coke adhering to the chamber walls may be removed by chisels 54 suspended from beam 55, these chisels being described in Specification 497,067.
