Abstract

Cyclic amidines, i.e. compounds containing one or more groups -N : C(NH2)- within a ring system, are converted into N-substitution products by heating them with other primary or secondary amino compounds, one of the reagents being taken as a mineral-acid salt. Examples are given in which (1) melamine and methylamine hydrochloride yield N : N1-dimethylmelamine, with some trimethylmelamine; (2) melamine and dimethylamine hydrochloride yield N-dimethylmelamine, with some N : N1-di(dimethyl)melamine; (3) melamine and octadecylamine hydrochloride yield N-octadecylmelamine and N : N1-dioctadecylmelamine; (4) melamine and aniline hydrochloride yield sym. triphenylmelamine; (5) melamine monohydrochloride and aniline yield, mainly, triphenylisomelamine; (6) phenylguanazole monohydrochloride and aniline yield N-phenylphenylguanazole, with some N : N1-diphenylphenylguanazole; (7) 2 : 4-diaminoquinazoline and butylamine hydrochloride yield 2 : 4 - di(butylamino)quinazoline; (8) 2 : 4 : 6-triaminopyrimidine and methylamine hydrochloride yield 2 : 4 : 6 - tri(methylamino)pyrimidine. The treatment of diaminopyrimidines and amines of the pyrrodiazole series is mentioned.
