Abstract

In the production of threads, bands, films, tubes, or the like from solutions of cellulose esters or ethers or of vinyl polymerides by coagulation in initially neutral precipitating baths, there is added to the cellulosic or vinyl polymer solution, for the purpose of accelerating the coagulation, a monobasic or polybasic carboxylic or oxycarboxylic acid in a quantity not exceeding 2 per cent of the quantity of the thread- or film-forming substance contained therein. The acid used is one which is soluble in the precipitation bath. Alternatively the small quantity of acid or a part of it may be added to the precipitating bath. A mixture of two or more acids may be used. Acetic, butyric, benzoic, cinnamic, oxalic, malonic, succinic, tartaric, citric, phthalic, salicylic, and mandelic acids are specified. In an example, a solution of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride in methylene chloride is cast on to a glass plate which is then passed into a precipitating bath consisting of aqueous alcohol. The film solution contains a small quantity of oxalic or tartaric acid. In another example a film is made from a solution of nitrocellulose in alcohol and acetone with a small addition of succinic acid. In another example, a solution of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride containing a small amount of salicylic acid is poured into a slightly conical glass tube and then poured out again. The coating on the inner surface of the tube is set by means of a solution of alcohol and finally removed as a film tube. Polystyrene, poly-acrylic acid derivatives, polyvinyl ethers, poly-iso-olefines, mixed polymers including those of vinyl chloride and acrylic acid derivatives, polymers having more than 2 components, and polymers of cyclic bodies having vinyl groups as side chains, may be used instead of chlorinated polyvinyl chloride. the film-forming solution contains pigments or fillers such as zinc white the proportion of acid required to acccelerate the coagulation may be considerably reduced. The solution may also contain softeners, resins, dyes, and waxes.
