Abstract
496,547. Stirring-apparatus. COOMBS, J. A. May 25, 1937, No. 14457. [Class 86] [Also in Group I] Plant for the manufacture of fertilizers by the fermentation of refuse comprises a fermenting floor open to the atmosphere having an embankment on which is supported a mechanical labourer adapted to be traversed over and to handle the materials upon the floor which is porous to permit drainage of liquid therethrough. In the plant shown in Fig. 1, a composting floor is divided into bays 21-24 by an elevated roadway 25 and subways 26, 27. The roadway 25 and elevated ways 28, 29 are connected, by the incoming way 30, with a main road 32 and constitute means by which material is conveyed on trucks &c. to one end of the sections 39 into which the bays are divided by embankments 38 forming the tracks for the mechanical labourer. The material is turned over and agitated and traversed from the point of entry 45, Fig. 5, to the point E where it is discharged into a truck 45b. The labourer comprises a self-propelled vehicle carrying a rotary tool 49 and is provided with a tank 53 for activating liquid which is sprayed on to the compost through a tube 54. Rails carried by a girder structure 59, Fig. 4, mounted on wheels 61 running on rails on the sides 26, 27 are provided to enable the labourer to be shifted from one section to another. The labourer may be constructed as described in Specification 496,637, [Group XXI]. The outlet 46, Fig. 10, at the discharge station is closed by a counterweighted cover 64 controlled by an operating handle 67 moving over a sector on which it may be secured by a removable pin 68. In an arrangement shown in Fig. 9, the composting beds are provided with roofs having ventilators 85, the sides of the plant being open to the atmosphere. The trucks for incoming refuse are supported on runways 86 and the material is discharged at 89. Tanks 93 are provided for liquid activator.
