496,309. Punching jacquard cards &c. JONES, N. July 30, 1937, No. 21092. [Class 142 (i)] In a cutting-machine for reproducing jacquard cards or verdol paper rolls the master card or roll F is placed between the ends of punch-controlling needles C and a box B carrying spring-pressed detector needles b. When the box B moves from the right to the position shown, those needles b which pass through holes in the card &c. push to the left corresponding needles C which slide in boxes h in stepped blocks H; the end extensions c<1> of needles C thus selected lie athwart the upper ends of certain punches D, so that when a blank card E is raised on a platen L and forced against the lower ends of the punches, holes are cut by the selected (thwarted) punches, the upper ends of unselected punches being pushed by the card into their bores h2. When the platen L is lowered the unselected punches are depressed by engagement of shoulders d<1> thereon with bars J secured to a link J<1> carried by the platen ; similarly the needles C are returned to the right by bars G secured to the box B. The master cards F and blanks E are moved intermittently by cylinders R, R<1> a distance corresponding to one card ; two cards are presented at each station, the punching of any one card being performed in two stages ; this allows of the use of punches of larger diameter than is possible if all the punching is performed in one operation ; as shown the punches are thickened between their ends. Instead of using the extensions c<1>, the ends of the needles C may be enlarged. When the holes in the cards are very close together the steps H can be enlarged to allow room for drilling the bores h ; resilient or bent needles may then be used, which will allow of the ends that enter the holes h being out of alignment with the ends engaged by the needles b. A pinion a drives pinion m fixed on shaft M an eccentric M<1> on which vertically reciprocates platen L. A star wheel and pin connection on shaft M drives, via a sprocket chain, the card cylinders R, R<1>. A cam on shaft M rocks bellcrank lever m<3> to impart horizontal reciprocation to the box B.
