Abstract
496,161. Operating flaps on folding aircraft wings. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and LOBELLE, M. J. O. Nov. 30, 1937, No. 33095. [Class 4] In an aircraft wherein parts of the trailing marginal portions of the wing are adapted to be folded over or under the main body of the wing prior to wing folding, a flap pivotally mounted on the folding part is arranged to be raised or lowered by the pushing action of one or other of two rods on a lever of the first order which is pivotally mounted on the folding part, the rods being slidably mounted on or carried by a non-folding skirt portion of the wing. In flying position the folding part a, Fig. 1, of the wing abuts against a stub portion b. A flap g is pivoted at h on part e which is adapted prior to wing folding to fold over the main part of wing a about a pivot f. A link connects a lever p on the flap to one end of a lever m, n pivoted in part e at o. The ends of arms m, n are contacted by push rods j, k respectively which are caused to move in opposite directions by fluid pressure acting on a piston u fixed to rod k and working in a cylinder t carried by a bracket v projecting from wing part b. Before folding, piston u is urged to the " flap down " position to enable part e to swing upwardly without fouling the operating rods. A spring 17 then returns the flap to nested position. The rods k on opposite sides of the machine are interconnected for conjoint movement. Specifications 484,622 and 496,003 are referred to.
