Abstract
Textile materials are rendered water-repellent and resistant to creasing by impregnation with a mixed polymerizate obtained by common polymerization of maleic anhydride and a vinyl ester of a fatty acid having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule or a vinyl ether of an aliphatic alcohol having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, and with an aldehyde or substance yielding an aldehyde or a soluble synthetic aldehyde resin or the components or a water-soluble precondensation product thereof, and drying the impregnated material. Instead of the mixed polymerizate, the free acid or a functional derivative other than the anhydride may be employed; alternatively, a mixed polymerizate obtained by common polymerization of a mono- or di-ester of maleic acid with an aliphatic alcohol containing at least 6 carbon atoms and a vinyl ester or ether may be employed. Crease-resisting agents specified are formaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine; mixtures of formaldehyde and urea or of acetaldehyde and phenol and the condensation product of polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde; and dimethylol urea. Impregnation with these substances may be performed in the presence of acids or compounds splitting off acid, e.g. tartaric, lactic, glycollic, acetic or formic acids, ammonium chloride or diethyl tartrate. The textiles may be impregnated with the two components successively, in either order, or simultaneously in a single bath; and may be subjected to a raised temperature during or after drying and after one or both impregnations where these are successive. Tissues, yarns, or loose fibres of cotton, linen, staple fibre, wool, casein wool, and viscose, copper or acetate artificial silk, or mixed fabrics may be treated. Examples are given of treatment of various materials successively, in baths containing the creaseproofing and waterproofing agents and vice versa; also of a single-bath treatment. In example (13) the crease-proofing agent comprises a solution obtained by heating 44 parts of polyvinyl alcohol for 30 minutes, at boiling temperature, with 440 parts of water, 1 part of formaldehyde and 1 part of hydrochloric acid, and finally adding 2,5-3 parts of sodium acetate and cooling. The following mixed polymerizates are described in the examples: maleic anhydride with vinyl octadecyl ether, vinyl palmitic acid ester, vinyl dodecyl ether and vinyl tetradecyl ether; maleic acid di-octadecyl ester and vinyl octadecyl ether; vinyl stearate and maleic acid mono-octadecyl ester; maleic acid and vinyl laurate; the monomethyl ester from the mixed polymerizate of maleic anhydride and vinyl octadecyl ether; the free acid of the mixed polymerizates from maleic anhydride and vinyl octadecyl ether; and the pyridine salt of the free acid of the mixed polymerizate of maleic anhydride and vinyl dodecyl ether. Specification 464,860 is referred to.
