Abstract

495,734. Drying gases; refrigerating. TENNANT, W. J. (Dow Chemical Co.) Sept. 6, 1937, No. 24326. [Classes 29 and 34 (i)] A method of dehumidifying a gas, such as air, comprises contacting the moist gas with an aqueous solution of a mixture of lithium bromide with one or more of the salts lithium chloride, calcium chloride, and calcium bromide in such proportions that the solution if saturated would have a lower vapour pressure than a saturated lithium bromide solution at the same temperature. The invention also comprises a method of cooling water by partial evaporation thereof under sub-atmospheric pressure, the water vapour being absorbed by an aqueous solution of a mixture of lithium bromide with one or more of the salts lithium chloride, calcium chloride and calcium bromide, in the same proportions as required for the method of dehumidifying a gas. The proportions of the salts from which the solutions can be made may be ascertained by the chart shown, in which the corner A represents one mole of calcium chloride, B one mole of calcium bromide, C one mole of lithium chloride and D one mole of lithium bromide. A point E, for example, represents a solute composition containing À3 mole of calcium chloride and À7 mole of calcium bromide. The curved lines or isobars 11, 12, 13, 14 are lines traced by a point representing solute compositions of solutions saturated at 90‹ F, all of which on the same curve have been found to have substantially the same vapour pressure. The solute compositions in the area between the two lines 11 representing the vapour pressure of 1À8 mm. and the intersected portions of the sides BD, CD, all produce solutions having a substantially lower vapour pressure than 2À1 mm. which is that of saturated lithium bromide solution at the same temperature. The lowest vapour pressures are obtained by the solutions, the solutes of which are indicated by points within the isobar 14.
