Abstract

495,194. Self-tapping screws. CLAYTON, C. E. EVERY-. (Illinois Tool Works) May 7, 1937, No. 13144. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A self-tapping screw comprising a threaded holding portion A, Fig. 1, and a hardened threaded tapping portion B, is provided with threads on the tapping portion decreasing in thread diameter towards the entering end, the core diameter of this portion increasing in the same direction. The axial pitch of the thread is uniform throughout the screw but the exposed core portions 16, Fig. 1, increase in axial width towards the entering end of the screw, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, where the reverse tapering characteristics of the screw are indicated by dot-and-dash lines. A recess 18, Fig. 1, may be employed giving a cutting edge 22 and a yielding edge 24, but alternatively, the screw may be employed without a recess and produce a screw by "indenting " the work. In the latter case the screw is formed with an initial guiding portion in which the crest diameter of the threads is constant for a short distance followed by a crest portion of increasing diameter similar to the portion B. The screw may also be provided with a multiple thread. Specification 495,252, [Group XXII], is referred to.
