Abstract

495,048. Rubber threads. SPENCER, W. M. May 6, 1937, No. 12953. Addition to 464,958. [Class 70] In the manufacture of rubber threads by the process described in the parent Specification, in which latex flowing downwardly over a weir is drawn by capillarity into grooves on the surface of a heated member, the grooves are replaced by blades, the collecting edge of which may be flat, convex, or slightly concave. A drum is made up of discs 18, Figs. 2, 3, separated by wider discs 20 of less diameter, mounted on a shaft 19. This is rotated in a clockwise direction, and picks up latex flowing over weirs 5, 9, by capillarity. The distance of the collecting edge 21 from the normal surface of the latex may be 0.25-3 mm. depending on the viscosity of the latex, temperature, and speed of rotation. For forming flat threads, groups of blades 27, Fig. 8, are employed the members of which are sufficiently close to allow the latex to bridge the gap 29.
