494,840. Golf &c. practising-appliances. DOE, J. D., and HARVEY, F. W. C. R. May 1 1937, No. 12482. [Class 132 (ii)] A device for use in practising golf, tennis, cricket or other ball-driving games comprises a screen constituted by two series of crossing wires 5, 9, each wire being connected to a movable element 7 adapted, when the wire is displaced by the passage of a ball through the screen, to bring into action an indicating means for the purpose of enabling the position at which the ball passes through the screen to be ascertained. The wires are stretched by springs 4, 8, and each movable element 7 forms part of a circuit through a corresponding lamp 16. In the normal position of the element 7 an insulated part thereof engages an opposing contact and maintains the circuit open. When the element is displaced by a ball striking its wire, the insulated part slips off the contact and the circuit through the lamp is completed. By observing the positions of the illuminated lamps, the character of the stroke may be deduced. The elements 7 are restored to circuit-breaking position by depressing a pedal 19, thereby pulling all the wires and centralizing the elements with the insulated parts against their contacts. A net may be provided at the back of the screen to stop the ball and direct it under the screen for replay. Protective netting may be arranged in front of the framework of the screen.
