Abstract

494,786. Vacuum cleaners. REPLOGLE, D. B. Aug. 10, 1937, No. 22028. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1936. [Class 8 (i)] In a vacuum cleaner, an openended suction pipe communicating intermediate its ends with the source of suction, is adapted to be connected at either end with suction tools, and has valve means in the pipe to control the flow of air, which means are operated by moving a section of the pipe relatively to the remainder of the pipe. The cylindrical body of the cleaner may be made of hard fibre, synthetic resin, metal, &c. A motor plant 11 with an outlet 12 is provided at the bottom. An outer, coarse mesh, dust collector 14 of wire, cloth, matting, &c. and an inner, relatively fine-mesh, dust collector 15, preferably of porous paper, are provided. The part 15 is detachably secured to a removable, transparent cap 16 of glass, celluloid, &c. The pipe or handle 18 is curved from top to the bottom so that the upper portion is on one side of the longitudinal axis, and the lower portion on the opposite side. The pipe 18 has extensions 19, 21 to which cleaning - tools are connected. The bottom extension 19 is connected by a rotatable joint to the floor tool 22. A collapsable roller support C may support the tool as it is moved across the floor. The power plant 11 is suspended below and to. the rear of the floor tool. The handle grip 21 is below the body member so that it does not obstruct the operator's view of the transparent cap, and carries a valve which can be adjusted to two positions. The valve and grip are bodily removable. If the valve is reversed, the air is then drawn into the grip portion 21. The apparatus may be housed as shown in Fig. 5. The handle portion 21 is supported by a hosepipe hanger A. An extension hose B may also be provided.
