[Class 140] A covering for floors, walls, furniture or the like comprises a sheet-like body having a composite cementating portion comprising a layer suitable for bonding to a floor &c. surface and an intermediate layer of permanently-plastic, cohesive material adapted to permit stripping of the covering and also relative movement between the covering and floor &c. As shown, a preformed ready-to-lay floor covering comprises an impregnated felt foundation 11 coated on one side with linoleum composition 10 and on the other with an outer layer 13 of a normally non-sticky clay/lignin/glycerine composition and an intermediate layer 12 of a permanently plastic rubber/rosin composition. The layer 13 is activated by water when applying the covering to the floor 15. A molasses /clay composition may replace or be admixed with the clay / lignin /glycerine composition ; and the rubber / rosin composition may be replaced by rosin, rosin oil, soft resin or bituminous compositions, preferably containing rubber, or may be softened, e.g. with a drying-oil cement. Alternatively the normally non-sticky layer may comprise a composition, e.g. of nitrocellulose, rosin and dibutyl phthalate, adapted to be activated by a solvent other than water, e.g. a mixture of ethyl acetate, toluol and ethyl alcohol ; and the permanently - plastic layer may comprise a water-soluble or water-dissociable layer, e.g. of glue /glycerine /calcium chloride composition. The sheet material may comprise woven fabric and may be provided with a decorative surface of paint or enamel. A sheet of felt, impregnated or unimpregnated, may be provided with a composite coating on one or both sides.
