[Class 83 (iv)] Rolling.-A cylindrical surface a is finished, rectified, or expanded by rolls b pressed towards the surface by riding up any one or more depressions e in the cylindrical mandrel during rotation of the work or mandrel or both, the depressions e being of a depth equal to the difference in diameter between the treated and the untreated surfaces. For external smoothing the rolls are surrounded by a sleeve with like depressions e. Pipes &c. may be grooved by having grooved rolls b. A further smoothing may be given by replacing the mandrel by another of larger diameter.
