Abstract

494,241. Marking and filling collapsable tubes. JOHNSON, B. E., and AKTIEBOLAGET G. AREHNS MEKANISKA VERKSTAD. April 22, 1937, No. 11556. [Classes 66, 94 (i), and 125 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] Collapsable tubes, before being filled, have the mantle of each tube impressed with a number, serial number, or other mark which cannot be scraped out ; the tubes are preferably formed with an internal irregularity and the marking device has means for engaging the irregularity and turning each tube into a predetermined angular position so that the number &c. is impressed in a definite position relative to a point on the tube. As shown, the tube filling device 51, Fig. 4, is arranged in sequence to the marking device 52 and both devices are arranged above the path of a conveyer 5, Fig. 1, which is moved stepwise with the tubes inserted by the operator in the pockets 4 of the conveyer and the tubes are raised in succession by a camactuated elevator 38 on to a supporting member 13 journalled in the machine bracket 9 and carrying a notched member 45 adapted to engage the irregularity in the tube. The member 13 is oscillated by a pinion 17 and rack 19 actuated from the cam shaft 47 and as the tube is raised the member 45 yieldingly engages the irregularity in the tube and rotates it to a definite position. The member 13 carries an exchangeable elastic portion 14, e.g. of copper-covered rubber, and the die for impressing the mark on the tube co-operates with the member 13 and is carried bv a hub 11 rotatable on a shaft 10 in the bracket 9 ; the hub 11 has an arm 32 carrying a roller 48 held by a spring 34 in contact with the bevelled end of a rod 33 which is actuated from the camshaft 47 to press the figures of the drum 24 of the die against the soft mantle of the tube held on the elastic part 14 of the member 13. The elevator 38 then moves down to allow the impressed tube to drop off the member 13 into the pocket 4 and is then carried on to the filling station 51. The drum 24 of the die is periodically actuated to change the number &c. impressed on the tube by a pin 27 which periodically engages a yoke 26 on the shaft 25 of the drum and is secured to an arm 28 projecting from a hub 12 on the shaft 10 and carrying a bevelled projection 29 which is actuated by the tube caps so that the tubes obtain consecutive serial numbers; a bolt 6 may be placed in certain pockets of the conveyer to engage the projection 29 so that series of tubes will be provided with the same number. The projection 29 may be omitted and the pin 27, for periodically moving the drum 24 of the die, actuated by a cam carried by the member 13 ; in this case, if there is no tube placed on the member the elevator 38 will ascend somewhat higher than usual and on an arm on the shaft 56 will be swung opposite an abutment on the lever 21 which is then prevented from actuating the pinion 17 and cam carried by the member 13. The supporting member 13 may carry the impressing figures &c.
