Abstract

494,175. Heat-treating rails. BAL, M. J. April 22, 1937, No. 11565. Convention date, April 22,1936. [Class 72] In the heat-treatment of a rail weld, the joint and regions on either side of the weld are annealed and then cooled by sprinkling with cooling fluid adjacent sections of these regions separately and successively from the outermost coldest sections towards, and including, the joint, the fluid being applied when the respective sections reach the optimum temperature for hardening or cooling. The sections symmetrically disposed about the joint are treated simultaneously. A container is provided with compartments 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 each having a filling opening 9, the container being turned upside down for filling, and a perforated bottom. The end plates 6, 7 of the container are saddled above the rail and the upper part of each compartment is provided with a tube 10 having a valve 11 which can be opened or closed so as to cause water to flow through the perforated bottom of the compartment or the flow of water to stop. Tubes 10 from symmetrical compartments may be connected so that one valve 11 is used for both such tubes. A flexible sheet 12 fixed to a bar 13 extending between the plates 6, 7 is placed so that its free end is pressed elastically on to the rail head, so as to discharge the water laterally away from the base of the rail.
