Abstract

494,085. Treating rice. HUZENLAUB, E. G., and ROGERS, J. H. Feb. 5, 1937, Nos. 3505 and 10056. [Class 58] Paddy or dehusked rice is placed in a pressure vessel 1 that can rotate in bearings 7 and steam is blown into the vessel 1 through a valve 30 and a hollow trunnion 6a. Prior to the steam being admitted, the air in the vessel may be evacuated by opening a vacuum connection 24 and a quantity of water may be supplied to wet the grain through a cock 23. As the steam is admitted, any air displaced is evacuated through a valve 3. While the vessel is slowly rotated the steam pressure is allowed to rise to ten pounds per square inch for a period of about three minutes, after which the steam supply is shut off and the valve 3 opened. Water is again supplied to the rice through the cock 23 and then steam supplied as before ; valve 3 is again opened to let the vapour blow off and condensed and wash water is allowed to escape from the chamber. The treatment is again repeated, and then, after the interior of the vessel has, if desired, been again subjected to vacuum, the contents are discharged on to a belt 32 that carries them to a drying machine or sun floor.
