Abstract
493,700. Ironing-machines. POINTON, J. E., TANQUERAY, D. Y. B., DEWHURST, F., and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. March 12, 1937, No. 7364. [Class 138 (ii)] The bed or each section of the bed of a roller ironing-machine is formed as a solid plate 21 having contiguous or embedded or partially embedded steam pipes 1 ... 16. For minimizing or equalizing stresses occasioned during the heating up or cooling down of the bed, the pipes 1 ... 8 are spaced apart differently from the pipes 9 ... 16 and they are so arranged that five and a half pipes are provided in the crests above the line x containing the centre of gravity. Six of the pipes are connected to one steam supply header and the other ten are connected to another header, the steam preferably passing through the two series in opposite direction. The bed is heated initially by passing steam through one series only. An I-girder, which may or may not be heated, may be provided at the bottom of the bed, the two coacting surfaces being machined, and an intermediate layer of copper or other conductor may be arranged between them. This has the effect of lowering the centre of gravity, whereby there may be as many pipes above as are below the line x, thereby balancing the stresses tending to distort the bed longitudinally. In other forms, the number or diameter of the steam pipes or the depths to which they are embedded may be varied.
