Abstract

493,458. Sheafing and binding machines. BORLEY, G. April 8, 1937, No. 10038. [Class 6 (iii)] The main platform 1 is provided with transverse conveying means consisting of upstanding spikes or fingers 25 on endless chains 20 passing over sprocket wheels 21, 24 on shafts 22, 23 respectively. The spikes project through slots between plates 26 forming the platform and the crop is conveyed transversely till it passes from the upwardly inclined ends of the plates 26 on to an upwardly inclined plate 28 up which it is carried to the sheafing mechanism by hook members 31. To give the ends 31a of the hooks the elliptical movement for drawing the crop up the plate 28, the cranks 33 of a shaft 32 pass through the shanks of the hooks and at the ends the shanks are connected by links 34 loose on a rod 35. The hooks are arranged to operate in succession on the crop. The cutter bar 2 is actuated from a crank or cam 4 on a shaft 5 that is driven through a universal joint from a power shaft 36 extending from the tractor ; this shaft also drives, through chain-and-sprocket gear, the binding mechanism shafts 41, 29, the crankshaft 32 and the shaft 23 and through worm- and-bevel gear the reel 7, the reel frame being provided with a forwardly extending rod 15 so as to be adjustable by the driver of the tractor. Caster wheels 38, 40 and a positively adjustable wheel 39 provide for the machine being drawn sidewardly to pass through gates &c.
