[Class 6 (i i).] A mowing or reaping machine of the type in which the crop is cut by a series of spaced blades on an endless chain that is driven continuously in one direction and passes round sprocket wheels with horizontally arranged axes so that the upper and lower reaches of the chain are brought into juxtaposition whereby the blades associated with the upper and the lower parts are in operation at one time, the blades cooperating with spaced fingers, is arranged so that the chain and the blades pass through slots in the fingers the slots being spaced apart to prevent the blades coming into contact with each other. The fingers 2 are provided with slots 3, 4, for the passage of an endless chain 5 carrying a series of spaced blades 6 formed integrally with the links of the chain or riveted or otherwise secured thereto. The chain passes over sprocket wheels 7, 8 the wheel 8 being secured to another sprocket wheel 9 that is connected by a chain 10 to a wheel 11 driven through a slipping clutch 14 from the main wheels of the machine. A roller 15 holds the upper track of the chain down to the slots in the fingers at one end a similar roller or a deflecting plate 17 serving a similar purpose at the other end. A swath board 22 mounted at the end of the knife bar protects a grain wheel 23 and guard plates 25, 26 are provided over the chains. The slots may be parallel or may diverge in the direction of movement of the chain. The blades may be sharpened in situ by a carborundum or similar roller mounted upon a lever that may be actuated by the attendant to bring the roller into contact with the blades.
