Abstract

493,412. Vehicle spring-suspensions ; axles; radius-rods. DAIMLER - BENZ AKT.-GES. Dec. 22, 1937, No. 35508, Convention date, Dec. 28, 1936. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] The ends of a vehicle axle, in particular the rear axle of a motor vehicle, of the kind which is guided by radius rods or stays 11, 12 disposed laterally of the frame 6, are made capable of a relative twisting movement about a transverse axis by constructing the axle of two semi-axles of which one is rotatable within the other, the object being to relieve the rods 11, 12, with which the semi-axles have a rigid connection, of stresses due to unequal deflections of the wheels 1, 2. As shown the inner ends of two semi-axles 3, 4 are formed as inner and outer concentric and relatively rotatable sleeves 18, 19, which are prevented from relative lateral movement by means of a collar 20 secured to the inner sleeve 18. The outer ends of the semi-axles are connected to wheel bearings 13, 14, to which are also connected the rear ends of the rods 11, 12, the forward ends of the latter being ball-jointed at 15, 16 to the frame 6. Secured to the outer sleeve 19 is a ball 10 which is slidable within an arcuate substantially vertical guide 8 curved about a centre lying on the transverse axis joining the balls 15, 16. Thus the axle 3, 4 is vertically guided, while at the same time, it may pivot at 10 about the longitudinal central axis of the vehicle. Depending from the outer ends of the semi-axles 3, 4 are swinging links 36, which are connected by horizontal arms 34, 35 to torsion rods 28, 29 secured to the frame 6, thus providing for a low suspension of the frame. The wheels 1, 2 are driven through the usual differential gearing 21 and shafts 22, 23.
