Abstract
493,318. Photophones ; modulating light. SCOPHONY, Ltd., and WIKKENHAUSER, G. April 23, 1937, No. 11649. [Class 40 (iii)] In a photophone in which a beam of light projected from a transmitter to a receiver is modulated in accordance with the sound transmitted, the light modulation is produced by passing the light through a cell containing liquid in which are formed high frequency compressional waves modulated in accordance with the sound. Light from a source 7, is passed through two cylindrical lenses 8, 12, having power perpendicular to the plane of the figure and between which is a light modulating cell 10 of the type described in Specification 439,236, having faces 9, 11, constituting cylindrical lenses having power at right angles to that of the lenses 8, 12. It is then passed through an aperture in a mask 13 and formed into a parallel beam by a lens 14 for transmission to the receiver. A number of light modulators may be arranged side by side so that each modulates a part of the beam with the same signal, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). A reflector may be substituted for the lenses 8, 12, Fig. 3 (not shown).
