Abstract

493,268. Testing fatigue of materials. BOSCH GES., R., (formerly BOSCH AKT.- GES., R.). April 12, 1938, No. 11130. Convention date, April 12, 1937. [Class 106 (ii)] In a mchine for testing by reciprocating bending, one end of the test piece is secured to the free end of an oscillating lever of which the axis crosses the axis of the unloaded test piece at right-angles while the other end of the test piece is secured to the free ends of two parallel plate springs. A bar 6 supported at the ends by plate springs 5 is reciprocated by a connecting rod 7 from a pulley 18 driven by a motor 3. One end of the rod 7 is hinged to the bar and the other is adjustable in a slot across the pulley to vary the stroke of the bar 6. The motor is also adjustable bodily. An element 10 is secured to a rail 2 by a clamp 8 and screw 9. Pivoting about a pin in the member 10 is a lever 12 one arm of which has a pin-and-slot connection 16 with the bar 6 while the other carries a clamp for one end of the specimen 27, the clamp bolt 30 passing through a hole in the specimen. The other end of the specimen is similarly clamped to a block 25 carried by the free ends of parallel leaf springs 22, 20 secured to the element 10. When the bar 6 is reciprocated, the lever 12 is oscillated and the specimen bent. The device may accommodate more than one specimen as shown. For measuring the degree of bending a gauge as shown in Fig. 6 is used. A member 31 having two spaced knife edges 32 has pivoted to it a lever 34 which grips the specimen 27 between the knife edges. The plunger of a dial gauge 36 engages the lever 34 and measures the sag of the specimen.
